Evaluation of Elongated Styloid Process in Patients with Oral Submucous Fibrosis Using Panoramic Radiographs

Abstract: Introduction Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is an insidious disease affecting the oral cavity, pharynx, and upper digestive tract. It is characterized by a juxtaepithelial inflammatory reaction followed by fibroelastic change in the lamina propria and associated epithelial atrophy. Higher levels of TGF-b present in patients with OSF could be responsible for impetus to remnants of Reichert's cartilage present in styloid complex leading to partial or complete ossification of associated ligaments. So, a study was … Show more

“…18,23,26,27 With respect to the ESP seen in OSMF, Shivakumar et al relates to significant association between the two conditions with 31.4% of study patients displaying an ESP and the range of elongation ranging from 31-52 mm which can be considered significantly higher as compared to earlier studies done on common population. 13 This observation supports our findings of presence of an ESP in three patients and encourages further studies based on similar hypothesis to conclusively prove a positive coexistence of an ESP in patients afflicted with OSMF.…”

“…TGF-β works at the core of the entire process as it decelerates the degradation of collagen and promotes the deposition of insoluble collagen leading to clinical manifestations of trismus and difficulty in movements of the lower jaw. 11,13 Separately, an American otolaryngologist Eagle described styalgia as an autonomous anomaly related to an ESP due to mineralization of stylohyoid ligament complex. 14,15 The styloid process, a slender outgrowth from the base of the temporal bone, forms the stylohyoid complex along with the stylohyoid ligament and the lesser cornu of hyoid bone.…”

“…25 This interrelation warrants further research, specifically in patients having chronic habit of chewing tobacco products as the only previous study on similar lines done by Shivakumar et al consisted of a too small sample size to provide any definite inference. 11 Moreover, it presented a harmonious result to the other studies pertaining to the general population wherein bilateral elongation was found to be more common than unilateral elongation.…”

“…Such an interconnection has been previously conclusively stated in a single research paper which highlighted a positive rate of 31.4% of patients with OSMF exhibiting an ESP as opposed to 2-4% of the general population. 11 This coupled with our observations signals an absolute need to stringently screen each and every patient of OSMF using a simple OPG so as to obviate any postoperative complication in the form of hindrance to physiotherapy due to overlapping pain of an ESP.…”
