In the present study, it was attempted to investigate the cyclic resistance of equi-proportionate silt-sand range pond ash (with 50% fines) at relatively high shear strains using the strain-controlled cyclic triaxial test. The cyclic triaxial tests have been performed considering the effect of relative compaction (97-99%), cyclic shear strain (0.6-1.35%), frequency of loading (0.3-1 Hz) and effective confining pressure (50-100 kPa) on cyclic resistance of pond ash. Dynamic characteristics such as dynamic shear modulus and damping ratio of equi-proportionate silt-sand range pond ash was evaluated for all the parameters considered at high shear strain. The maximum value of the dynamic shear modulus and damping ratio of pond ash observed in this study was 6534.8 kPa and 23.64%, respectively. The dynamic shear modulus and damping ratio of pond ash was decreased from 6534.8 to 5023.87 kPa and 23.64 to 14.17% with the increase in shear strain amplitude from 0.6 to 1.35%. Besides, few relationships were established between the amount of energy dissipated until liquefaction and parameters influencing liquefaction using an energy concept. Аннотация. Разработка прогрессивных материалов оснований резервуаров для хранения нефти и нефтепродуктов в условиях низких температур и эффективных технологий для их устройства остаются актуальной задачей нефтегазовой отрасли. Для снижения тепловых потерь в грунты основания предлагается использовать теплоизолирующие добавки, например, гранулы вспененного полистирола. Целью выполненных исследований является изучение влияния искусственных теплоизолирующих добавок в песчаные грунты на деформационные свойства полученной смеси. Для достижения поставленной цели необходимо решить следующие задачи: подготовить образцы смеси «Песчаный грунт-гранулы вспененного полистирола», провести компрессионные испытания подготовленных образцов и выполнить обработку полученных результатов. Были проведены компрессионные испытания образцов смеси «Песчаный грунт-гранулы вспененного полистирола» с 5-процентным по объему содержанием теплоизолирующих добавок. Каждое испытание включало пять последовательных циклов «Нагружение-разгрузка». Максимальная величина нагружения составила 180 кПа. В ходе лабораторных исследований были получены данные о величине расчетного значения модуля деформации исследованных образцов смеси «Песчаный грунт-гранулы вспененного полистирола». Расчетное значение модуля деформации смеси после четвертого цикла нагружения составило 16,4 МПа, что выше минимально допустимого (15 Мпа) на 9%, а после пятого цикла-на 15%. Полученные результаты позволяют разработать конструкцию основания резервуара с улучшенными теплоизолирующими свойствами и технологию для его устройства.

Stress controlled cyclic triaxial tests have been carried out on coastal sand of Digha, West Bengal, India at different frequencies, confining pressures, relative densities and number of loading cycles for determination of influence of these parameters on cyclic strength (expressed in terms of cyclic stress ratio) and initial liquefaction of Digha sand. The test results provide evidence that increasing density of sand increases liquefaction potential, though it has been found that increase in effective confining pressure reduces cyclic strength of sand. Cyclic strength of sand decreases with increase of number of loading cycles at a specific density and a particular confining pressure. It has been observed that frequency of loading cycles does have any significant influence on the number of cycles for initial liquefaction of Digha sand. An empirical correlation has been developed on cyclic strength of sand based on these parameters and it has been found that this correlation fits quite well with the observed experimental results.
