Evaluation of Dynamic Disulphide/Thiol Homeostasis in Silica Exposed Workers

Abstract: Background:Oxidative stress is implicated as one of the main molecular mechanism underlying silicosis.Aims:In this study, our aim was to asses the redox status in occupationally silica-exposed workers, by evaluating the dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis.Study Design:Case-control study.Methods:Thirty-six male workers occupationally exposed to silica particles and 30 healthy volunteers, working as office workers were included to the study. Posteroanterior chest radiographs and pulmonary function tests of both… Show more

“…Solak et al [30] revealed that thiol/disulphide homeostasis shifts through disulphide side in oxidative stress of smokers. Similar findings have been obtained in silica-exposed workers, along with high serum disulphide level which is biomarker of oxidative stress [19].…”

“…Recently studies have shown that the thiol/disulphide homeostasis is disturbed in lung diseases such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome [17], COPD [26], asthma [26], silicasis [19], infectious pneumonia [27], pulmonary thromboembolism [28]. Dinc et al [16] declared that the SH level and %SH/total thiol ratio are low in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.…”

“…Topuz et al detected that serum thiol levels in acute pulmonary thromboembolism (APE) patients were significantly low compared to a control group and disulfide level and disulfide/total thiol ratio were higher in APE group than control group [31]. Recent studies have shown that the thiol/disulphide homeostasis is disturbed in lung diseases such as infectious pneumonia [32], obstructive sleep apnea syndrome [33], COPD, asthma [34] and silicasis [35]. Plasma total thiol levels are reduced in patients with COPD or asthma [36].…”
