“…Susceptible variety (CoN 03131) shows the minimum content of peroxidise content than tolerance variety (CoN 04131). The results are homologous to the findings of Merlin Christy et al, (2012) and Hemaprabha et al, (2013).…”

“…The increased accumulation of proline in cultivars under water stress suggests that such amino acid may be involved in the mechanism of osmoregulation and antioxidant defense, contributing to balanced ROS in leaves, as reported in previous studies on water-stressed sugarcane (Molinari et al 2007;Cia et al 2012;Hemaprabha et al 2013). Thus, proline concentrations may be a good biochemical parameter as indicator of water stress, although they were not efficient in signaling paraquat mediated stress due to the great reduction caused by the herbicide in organic solute.…”

“…Under field conditions, sugarcane presented the best drought tolerance responses in tillering and intense growth stages, precisely when the physiological differences among the varieties submitted to drought stress were more evident. In other studies, these development stages were also identified as a critical period by water demand in sugarcane crop submitted to drought stress (Ramesh & Mahadevaswany, ; Hemaprabha et al, ).…”

“…Asterisks indicate differences between irrigated and drought treatments in each variety according to Tukey's test (p < 0.05) the varieties submitted to drought stress were more evident.
