Evaluation of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles as an Ingredient in Diets for Pond Culture of the Freshwater Prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii

Abstract: Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) were evaluated as an ingredient in practical diets for pond culture of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Juvenile prawns averaging 0.66 ± 0.47 g were stocked into nine 0.02 ha ponds at 19,760/ha. Three isonitrogenous diets (29% crude protein) containing 0, 20, or 40% DDGS were fed to shrimp in triplicate ponds. Average yield, survival, individual weight, and feed conversion did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) among treatments. When averaged over th… Show more

“…Mean survival rate of red claw in the present study (64%) is similar to other reports: 36% (Brummet and Alon 1994); 50% (Salame and Rouse 2000). Total yield of red claw in the present study (903 kg/ha) was similar to values reported for freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Tidwell et al 1993) and red claw (Salame and Rouse 2000).…”

“…Selected plant proteins, typically soybean products, have received much attention due to their relatively low cost, good nutrient profile, and ready availability. Numerous studies have focused, with some success, on the use of cheap, sometimes novel, animal products (Balazs and Ross, 1976;Tinsley et al, 1984;Tacon and Jackson, 1985;Dominy and Ako, 1988;All, 1992;Hasan and Das, 1993;Hossain et al, 1993;Tidwell et al, 1993). Few attempts have been made to identify useful protein supplements for incorporation into artificial diets for the yabby.…”

“…McGinty and Alston (1993) recommended 25 thousand/ha stocking density for shrimp farming. Whereas Tidwell et al (1992) indicated a good production with the stocking density of 19.66 thousand/ha. However, white fishes were stocked at 0.44 thousand/ha in shrimp farms in Bagerhat district.…”
