Utilizing solar energy requires accurate information about global solar radiation (GSR), which is critical for designers and manufacturers of solar energy systems and equipment. This study aims to examine the literature gaps by evaluating recent predictive models and categorizing them into various groups depending on the input parameters, and comprehensively collect the methods for classifying China into solar zones. The selected groups of models include those that use sunshine duration, temperature, dew-point temperature, precipitation, fog, cloud cover, day of the year, and different meteorological parameters (complex models). 220 empirical models are analyzed for estimating the GSR on a horizontal surface in China. Additionally, the most accurate models from the literature are summarized for 115 locations in China and are distributed into the above categories with the corresponding solar zone; the ideal models from each category and each solar zone are identified. Comments on two important temperature-based models that are presented in this work can help the researchers and readers to be unconfused when reading the literature of these models and cite them in a correct method in future studies. Machine learning techniques exhibit performance GSR estimation better than empirical models; however, the computational cost and complexity should be considered at choosing and applying these techniques. The models and model categories in this study, according to the key input parameters at the corresponding location and solar zone, are helpful to researchers as well as to designers and engineers of solar energy systems and equipment.

Within the arranging and execution assessment of solar energy projects, particularly within the planning and estimation of solar photovoltaic sources as elective energy sources within the future, exact evaluation of Diffuse Solar Radiation (DSR) is one of the essential and basic issues. The target of this article is to use the new model to predict DSR in four different locations in Saudi Arabia. The author explored the available meteorological and radiation data. The data covers the 25 years from 1990 to 2014 and were measured at Al-Baha, Abha, Jeddah and Taif locations in Saudi Arabia. Through detailed statistical evaluation and analysis, 19 empirical models were tested to construct the best empirical model to estimate the monthly average daily DSR of Saudi Arabia. Using widely used statistical errors, namely MBE, MPE, RMSE, U95, R, t-test and GPI the proposed correlation model was compared with 19 models provided in the literature. Through this analysis, the cubic empirical equation model is selected as the good model. Compared with these existing models, this model reveals accurate results with minimal statistical errors. Based on these results, Model 22 gives the highest GPI value. The conclusion is the cubic equation model of the diffusion fraction (i.e., D/G = 0.215+2.123 (S/So) -3.547(S/So) 2 +5.142 (S/So) 3 is the best agreement model that has been mentioned in the previous discussion. This model is a generalized equation in Saudi Arabia, which can forecast the monthly average daily diffuse radiation on the horizontal plane at any site under similar climatic conditions without the measured climatic conditions. Experts or architects can use this model to perform site selection and technical and financial evaluation of solar energy applications and photovoltaic technology.

In this article, the performance of a double-effect LiBr-H2O absorption refrigeration cycle is studied and is improved by applying solar energy and utilizing nanofluids. A trough collector is used to preheat the working fluid before entering the generator of the cycle. In addition, four different nanofluids are considered as the heat transfer fluid of the collector: Al2O3, Ag, Cu, and CuO. The effects of using nanofluids on the outlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid, the temperature of the working fluid entering the generator, the heat produced by the generator, and COP of the cycle are studied. Different concentrations of the nanoparticles from 0 to 2.5% are considered for the nanofluids. The results indicate that in all the concentrations, Ag nanoparticles will have a better performance comparing to the other types. Furthermore, it was concluded that the higher concentrations of the nanoparticles and along with it the higher inlet temperature of the generator will decrease the generator heat production rate up to 4%. Moreover, considering the constant cooling capacity of the cycle, usage of the Ag nanoparticles in the concentration of 2.5% increases the value of COP up to 3.9%, with respect to the pure water.
