Evaluation of Different Urban Microclimate Mitigation Strategies through a PMV Analysis

Abstract: Abstract:Outdoor thermal comfort affects the health of the people and the quality of life in urban areas. This is the reason why in the past few years different mitigation strategies for the microclimate have been studied and examined. These strategies depend on those passive factors characterizing the urban setting that are able to affect the values of local meteorological variables, as the limit surfaces of the urban space (parterre and façades of the buildings). This paper examines the Cloister by Giuliano … Show more

“…Use of these materials is one of the strategies identified: (i) to counter the effect of for passive cooling, maintain a lower surface temperature. Use of these materials is one of the strategies identified: (i) to counter the effect of Urban Heat Island [8,9]; reduce energy demand for cooling during summer, while causing almost no major counter effect in winter [10][11][12][13]; and to improve thermal comfort in outdoor urban spaces [14]. This is especially the case with respect to the Mediterranean climate and measures of comfort [15,16].…”

“…Cool materials also bring other advantages when they are employed in the built environment, as reported in previous studies. They help Urban Heat Island mitigation, by lowering the quantity of heat absorbed by cities' surfaces [44], and they improve thermal comfort in the outdoor environment [45], when the sky-view factor is not too limited [39,41,46,47]. These aspects are not considered in this work; however, they have to be taken into account since they constitute additional benefits related to the use of these materials.…”

“…Ultimately, these typological and material characteristics have a large effect on the urban microclimate [11]. While they favor shading, ventilation, and heat refraction, they are no longer sufficient to guarantee good thermal and humidity comfort.…”

“…However, both July and August The starting point for environmental interventions in the historical fabric is therefore characterized by analyzing a typical building fabric composed of houses with towers, working-class neighborhoods, well-proportioned governmental buildings, churches, and noble palaces, and likewise by empty spaces such as large squares, public cloisters, porticoes, alleys, and main roads. The unique aspect of the center of Ascoli Piceno is the use of typical local materials, such as travertine, which was used over the centuries in different areas and ways, from building façades to the pavement in the squares Ultimately, these typological and material characteristics have a large effect on the urban microclimate [11].
