Evaluation of different strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for ethanol production from high-amylopectin BRS AG rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract: Ethanol is the main biofuel produced by fermentation route and the search for new feedstocks to produce fuel ethanol is still a great challenge. This work aims to compare the ethanol production from a new irrigated rice cultivar BRS AG to the conventional cultivar BRS PAMPA applied in Brazil. Six different commercial strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (BG-1, CAT-1, FT-858, JP-1, PE-2, and SA-1) were applied in fermentation reactions. Fermentations performed with BRS PAMPA rice revealed that the highest yields… Show more

“…Biomass concentration was measured with a spectrophotometer UV-VIS DR 6000 (HACH, Loveland, CO, USA) by optical density at 600 nm, values in g/L were obtained relating optical density with a calibration curve of the dry weight of K. marxianus . For glucose consumption and ethanol production by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC series 1200, Agilent Technology, Palo Alto, CA, USA), a BIORAD HP- ion exchange column was used, in an AGILENT® 1200 series equipment, with H SO N as mobile phase, at a flow of mL/min, the column temperature was C, and the Refractive Index detector temperature was C. The injection volume of 5 L, calibration curves were made with glucose and ethanol Sigma Aldrich at purity or higher, and a determination coefficient higher than for each compound [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…Recently, bioethanol has attracted much attention because it can achieve green biosynthesis. Apart from being a fuel with high octane number that can be mixed with existing energy substances, in this era of constant threats to human health, ethanol is also used widely as a medicine and food additive [ 1 , 2 ]. Bioethanol is synthesized primarily via fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae using various substrates such as glucose, sucrose, and starch.…”
