Evaluation of Different Grape Varieties for Resistance to Powdery Mildew Caused by Uncinula Necator

Abstract: Powdery mildew is one of the most serious and destructive diseases of grapes around the world including Iran. Although the application of chemical pesticides is the most common control method, the use of resistant varieties may be the most effective and environmentally sound strategy for managing the disease. Fourteen grape varieties were evaluated for testing powdery mildew (Uncinula necator) resistance under natural infection conditions and artificial inoculation methods were used during 2007-2008 in Ardabil… Show more

“…This analysis suggests that powdery mildew disease is more effective on cultivars or genotypes. (Boso et al, 2006;Khiavi et al, 2009;Alonso-Villaverde et al, 2011;Yu et al, 2012;Gaforio et al, 2015). This variability in susceptibility may have several causes and mechanisms (anatomical, biochemical, molecular, etc.).…”

“…Uncinula necator) is the most widespread and destructive disease of grapevines (Halleen and Holz 2001;Khiavi et al 2009). Powdery mildew may be observed on all the green parts of the grapevine: leaves, branches, infl orescences, pedicels and berries (Bulit and Lafon 1978).…”

“…Since then the disease has become the most important disease of grapevine [3]. The disease can reduce 50-70% of yield and 20% wine quality by causing off flavours [4,5]. The disease infect green leave tissues of grapevines, leaves appear white or greyish to white powdery, covering upper and lower surface of the leaves [3].…”

“…The infection starts when mycelium emerges from buds during initial growing, and then infects leaves [9]. The development of powdery mildew is seasonal and favoured in temperature ranging from 18-30°C [5]. The cleistothecia develop and become mature in the late summer and fall anywhere on the vine that mildew takes place [3].…”
