Evaluation of different carbon sources for anaerobic soil disinfestation against Rhizoctonia solani on lettuce in controlled production systems

Abstract: Effects of anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) on Rhizoctonia solani basal rot of lettuce were assessed considering: two soil types; different C-sources; different temperature regimes; two treatment durations; and two lettuce crop cycles, in the presence of a high disease incidence from artificial infestation with the pathogen. C-source, temperature, and incubation period, and their interaction, affected the efficacy of the ASD treatment for the lettuce–R. solani pathosystem, with differences depending on the … Show more

“…In general, the red lettuce cultivars tended to have increased FRAP and TPC values. These results are unsurprising given that red lettuce cultivars contain higher levels of anthocyanins, which, aside from imparting red/purple hues, constitute a considerable proportion of the phenolic antioxidant compounds compared with green lettuce cultivars [44,45]. These findings suggest that ASD application did not negatively impact the leaf color and quality attributes of direct-seeded baby leaf lettuce when compared with other commonly used grower practices.…”

“…In RSD, the potential to control phytopathogens with volatile compounds is greatly influenced by the carbon source used (Shennan et al, 2017;Mahalingam et al, 2020). There is considerable evidence that organic matter is important for disease control in anaerobic environments (Liu et al, 2016;Shrestha et al, 2018;Gilardi et al, 2020;Vecchia et al, 2020). Wheat bran-based amendment to RSD at low C:N ratio (C/N) reduced Cyperus esculentus reproduction compared with non-amended control (Shrestha et al, 2018).…”
