Evaluation of Demineralized Bone Matrix Paste and Putty in Periodontal Intraosseous Defects

Abstract: In summary, demineralized bone matrix paste, demineralized bone matrix putty, and demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft all demonstrated similar favorable improvements in soft and hard tissue parameters in the treatment of human intraosseous defects.

“…The reconstructions may be done with autogenous bone and synthetic or natural material [13][14][15][16] . Autogenous bone is regarded as the material of choice for bone reconstructions, although it may present some disadvantages such as greater surgical morbidity due to the need for a second surgical site 17 .…”

“…Several materials have been studied and used as bone substitutes in order to avoid the use of autogenous bone 19 . Among these, demineralized bone matrix 7,13,18 and calcium phosphate cement 2,14,20,21 deserve special mention. The present study used bovine demineralized bone matrix (Gen-oxorg ® , Baumer) based on Torricelli et al 25 , who showed that xenogenous materials may be more osteoinductive than human ones.…”

“…4,[23][24][25] The benefits of demineralized bone matrix with corticocancellous chips include its unlimited supply, its combined osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties (due to bioactive growth factors bone morphogenetic protein-2, vascular endothelial growth factor, fibroblast growth factor-α, and transforming growth factor-β1), and absence of donor-site morbidity to the patient. 25 The combination of demineralized bone matrix and allograft bone has been used successfully in pediatric patients without growth abnormalities, but its use thus far has been limited.…”

“…It presents osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties. These properties are known experimentally since the work of Urist in the 70s (16)(17)(18)(19). DBX consists in demineralised bone to which an organic carrier is added (sodium hyaluronate).…”

“…There is a lot of literature supporting its use as an accelerator of the bone healing. This biomaterial presents multiple applications in oral and craniomaxillofacial surgery (16)(17)(18)(19) . We have noticed that demineralised bone matrix accelerates significantly bone formation in the studied defect.…”
