Evaluation of delivered monitor unit accuracy of gated step‐and‐shoot IMRT using a two‐dimensional detector array

Abstract: The authors can conclude that gated IMRT is able to deliver an accurate dose to a patient during a procedure. The authors believe that the methodology and results can be transferred to other vendors' devices, particularly those that do not provide MLC log data for a verification purpose.

“…1. It mainly comprised three components: (1) a 2D IC array (MatriXX, IBA Dosimetry GmbH, Schwarzenbruck, Germany), 9 (2) a programmable motion table (Quasar, Modus Medical Devices Inc., Ontario, Canada), 10,11 and (3) two target phantoms: a cubic phantom for procedures of 4D modeling and an aperture lead block for MV x-ray irradiation.…”

“…The statistical values of the positional errors obtained from our QA system are presented in column (9), Table IV. The absolute mean difference, sd, and "absolute mean difference + 2 sd" ranged from 0.22 to 0.70, 0.16 to 0.43, and 0.54 to 1.55, respectively (n = 13).…”

“…This system only irradiates tumors in a specified respiratory phase region and uses an infrared reflective marker block placed on the patient's abdomen as an indicator of tumor motion. It has also been used in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), [1][2][3][4] and many clinics perform the gating method in volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) with RapidArc (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) to reduce the respiratory motion-induced error in the complex treatment process. RapidArc optimizes dose distribution via the combination of gantry rotation speed, dose rate, and the dynamic motion of a multi-leaf collimator (MLC).…”
