Objective: To evaluate autopsy reports of the deaths due to electrocution in terms of body mass index, body surface area, and organ weights with a biophysical perspective. Method: The retrospective study was conducted in Malatya, Turkey, and comprised autopsy reports of electrocution cases that were obtained from the local branch of the Council of Forensic Medicine related to the period from 2012 to 2019. Organ weights and ventricular thicknesses were compared in terms of body mass index and body surface area. Electrical marks were also evaluated in detail. Data was analysed using SPSS 18. Results: Of the 45 cases, 36(%) were male and 9(%) were female. The overall mean age was mean age of 39±13 years (range: 20-71 years). There were no significant differences in organ weights and ventricular thicknesses in different body mass index groups (p>0.05). The weights of head and heart were significantly different in relation to body surface area (p<0.05), but no significant difference were found for other organs and ventricular thickness (p>0.05). Conclusion: Comparing the organ weights in electrocution autopsies to normal organ weights may help decide the cause of death. During autopsy, electrical marks should be evaluated by considering the characteristics of the electrical current. Key Words: Electrocution, BMI, BSA, Organ weights.

Tóm tắt: "Điện giật" là thuật ngữ chỉ khi có dòng điện chạy qua cơ thể. Bên cạnh những lợi ích to lớn trong đời sống xã hội, điện cũng gây ra những hậu quả nặng nề về kinh tế, nguy hiểm tới tính mạng con người nếu thiếu hiểu biết và không tuân thủ các biện pháp phòng hộ trong sinh hoạt và sản xuất. Chúng tôi thu thập được 37 nạn nhân tử vong do điện giật có hồ sơ giám định y pháp do Bộ môn Y pháp -Trường Đại học Y Hà Nội, Viện Pháp y Quân đội tiến hành giám giám định từ tháng 5/2001 đến tháng 7/2016. Kết quả số nạn nhân nam gấp 8,3 lần nữ. Nhóm tuổi từ 18 đến 30 chiếm tỷ lệ cao nhất (37,8%), độ tuổi trung bình là 36,6. Dấu điện có mặt ở 78,4% số nạn nhân, chủ yếu là dấu điện vào 78,4%, tần suất xuất hiện dấu điện cao nhất ở tay phải 29,7%.Từ khóa: Điện giật, giám định y pháp, bỏng điện, dấu điện. Đặt vấn đề Điện giật là thuật ngữ chỉ khi có dòng điện chạy qua người [1]. Kể từ khi trở thành một sản phẩm thương mại vào năm 1849, điện trở thành một trong những "hàng hóa" nguy hiểm nhất trong xã hội. Thương tích do điện luôn tỷ lệ thuận với việc sử dụng rộng rãi trong xã hội [2]. Instances of electrocution are commonly encountered, although most of them may be prevented. The purpose of this review was to elucidate the thanatological features of electrical damage. Alternating current (AC) is an electrical current that periodically reverses its direction in a sinusoidal pattern and has the ability to cause muscular tetany, which can occur with extended exposure to the current. High-voltage alternating current (AC) above 1000 V frequently leads to electrical injuries in occupational environments. These injuries are marked by significant tissue damage and a heightened risk of sickness and mortality. Direct current (DC) is the continuous and unbroken movement of electric charge in a singular direction. Instances of direct current (DC) include phenomena such as lightning, batteries, and vehicle electrical systems. This is more likely to lead to severe isolated muscle spasms and asystole. The impact of AC on the body is mostly determined by its frequency. Tetany, a condition marked by persistent muscle contraction, is often induced by low-frequency alternating current (AC). This can be a challenge for an affected individual to detach from the current source, leading to a prolonged period of exposure. In conclusion, the extent of damage resulting from electric shock is determined by the attributes, intensity, duration, and pathway of the electrical current. Dermatological findings can be misleading and may not provide an accurate assessment of the extent of injury to underlying tissues.
