Evaluation of Cystic Echinococcosis Cases in terms of Sociodemographic, Clinical and Hospitalization Features in Karaman Province, Turkey

Abstract: Background: We aimed to investigate the cystic echinococcosis (CE) epidemiology in Karaman Province from 2010 to 2017 using data from the provincial state hospital. Methods: Overall, 482 cases were determined from Karaman State Hospital, Karaman Province, Turkey from 2010 to 2017. “…In general, the high rate of positive serology can be attributed to the fact that the sensitivity of these serological assays is mostly evaluated in nonintact cysts, as shown by literature [ 25 ]. In a study by Aydin and Adigüzel, 48 (90.6%) out of the 53 ruptured cases tested positive, whereas only 5 (12.5%) out of the 40 cases with intact cysts tested positive in Echinococcus IgG ELISA [ 26 ]. The high rate of false-negative ELISA results in our study probably follows the same reason, given that we only had three cases of ruptured cysts in our series.…”
