In this study, corrosiveness and scaling potential of groundwater in the Thanjavur district are evaluated based on the chemical analyses of 34 groundwater samples and GIS-based geostatistical mapping techniques. Total dissolved solid values show that six out of 34 samples exceeded the WHO drinking water standard 1000 mg/L. Piper plot shows that majority of the samples are mixed Ca-Mg-Cl type, Ca-HCO 3 type and Na-Cl. The results of the physicochemical parameters were used to calculate the most popular corrosion and scaling indices such as Langelier index (LI), aggressive index (AI), Ryznar index (RI), Puckorius index (PI) and Larson-Skold index (LS). Results of LI show that 41% samples have corroding tendency (LI < 0) and 59% of the samples have scaling tendency (LI > 0). AI has the same result as 41% of the water is moderately corrosive and the remaining has scaling tendency. RI suggests that 88% of the samples have corrosive tendency and 12% have rigorous corrosive tendency. Values of the PI suggest that all the samples were corrosive. Finally, the LS values show that 62% of the samples have scaling tendency and the remaining have corrosion tendency. In general, groundwater in the Thanjavur district shows both corrosive and scaling tendencies, which can cause severe damage to the machineries in the industries. Spatial variation of the corrosive and scaling indices suggests that the central region of the district has more corrosive tendencies and the western and eastern regions have more scaling tendencies.

IntroductionPhenol and its derivatives are the most common poisonous compounds which are stable in aqueous media and lead to many health issues. In this study, application of the carbon resulted from pomegranate peel is investigated in removal of phenol by adsorption method.Methodsto perform this cross-sectional study, first, samples of phenol with concentrations of 10 to 100 mg/L were prepared for six months in 2016. Then, the impacts of parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial concentration of phenol in adsorption process were investigated independently in Gonabad Chemistry Lab using a spectrophotometer at 505 nm as the wavelength. Furthermore, adherence of the samples to the isotherm models of Langmuir and Freundlich was determined by Excel 2016 and descriptive statistical methods were then reported.ResultsThe obtained results demonstrated a maximum adsorption capacity (ash) of 148.38 mgg-1 at pH 7, initial concentration of 100 mg L−1, and temperature of 23 ± 2 °C. The phenol removal rate was found to correlate directly to the adsorbent dosage and contact time, and inversely to the initial concentration of phenol. In addition, the investigations showed that the adsorption of phenol on the pomegranate peel ash follows the Freundlich model well with a correlation coefficient of R2 0.9056.ConclusionPomegranate peel ash could be used as an efficient and low-cost adsorbent for phenol removal from aqueous media.

Background and purpose: One of the major factors in the quality of drinking water is corrosion and scaling. The aim of the present study was to evaluate corrosion and scaling potential of drinking water supply network in Juybar (A city in Iran). Materials and Methods: 60 samples of drinking water in distribution network were collected randomly in summer and autumn seasons and transferred into laboratory. Some parameters including temperature, TDS, pH, total alkalinity and hardness and calcium hardness were measured based on the standard methods. The corrosion and scaling potential of water have been evaluated by Langelier, Ryznar, Puckorius and aggressive indices. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results:The mean values of pH, TDS, total alkalinity and calcium hardness in summer were 7.6, 637.5, 300, and 120 mg/l, respectively; and in autumn were 7.5, 646.5, 301, and 118 mg/l, respectively. The Langelier index in summer and autumn were 0.57 and 0.5, respectively, which showed that water had a potential for scaling. The Ryznar index in summer and autumn were 6.42 and 6.53, respectively indicating that water samples had neither scaling, nor corrosive potential. The Puckorius index in water samples was also determined to be 5.83 and 5.92 in summer and autumn, respectively, which showed that the samples were depositing water. Based on the aggressive index, the water samples in summer and autumn were 12.65 and 12.59, respectively, showing that water was mild scaling. Conclusion: This study showed that the drinking water of Juybar city has tendency to scaling.
