With the rapid global urbanization, the unlimited increasing transportation infrastructure has met the needs of urban expansion, but it has caused a series of ecological problems lacking consideration of ecological conservation. The land suitability assessment for supporting transport planning based on carrying capacity and demand for construction is an effective way to promote urban socioeconomic development and ecological conservation. Therefore, we constructed a logical framework of resources and environment supporting, traffic construction demand driving, and ecological protection red line and basic farmland constraining, and applied the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), GIS, three-dimensional magic cube method, and gravity model to evaluate the suitability of expressway development in Sichuan Province, China. The results showed that the spatial difference in the carrying capacity of resources and environment and the demand for expressway construction was relatively high in Sichuan, and those in eastern cities were even higher. The land suitability for supporting transport planning was relatively high, and the suitable areas with a grade from 8 to 10, accounted for 20.77% of the total study area, which could almost meet the demand for transportation infrastructure construction. The land suitability performed a circle structure with Chengdu as the core and gradually decreasing to the periphery. Overall, this study adds new insights to transport planning reform in other similar regions around the world and can provide important references for regional development planning and environmental protection.

Forests play a very important role in carbon dioxide emissions and climate change, and the development of China’s forestry is of great significance to our citizens. However, it is an arduous task for us to improve forestry output at a high and good level while taking environmental factors into account. In this paper, the non-expected super-efficiency SBM (slacks-based measure) model was used to measure the forestry ecological efficiency (FEE) of 31 provinces in China from 2004 to 2018, and the spatial and temporal evolution of FEE in different regions of China was analysed by using spatial econometric method. Tobit regression and random forest algorithm were selected to analyze the influence on FEE. The results showed that, firstly, the average annual increase of the national total factor productivity change of China’s forestry was 1.2%, and that the average annual increase of the national total factor productivity change in the eastern region was lower than that in the central and western regions. Secondly, the distribution of China’s FEE of the northeast and the south was higher, and FEE of China’s middle regions was relatively lower in 2004, but then the FEE in Northeast China has decreased, and the FEE has increased gradually from north to south in 2018. The agglomeration of high-tech industries in most regions of China had obvious positive spatial correlation characteristics in 2018. Thirdly, there was a negative correlation between forestry fixed assets investment and FEE, environmental regulation was an important factor affecting the ecological efficiency of forestry in China, and the level of economic development and industrial structure also had a certain impact on FEE.

The rapid development and implementation of smart and IoT (Internet of Things) based technologies have allowed for various possibilities in technological advancements for different aspects of life. The main goal of IoT technologies is to simplify processes in different fields, to ensure a better efficiency of systems (technologies or specific processes) and finally to improve life quality. Sustainability has become a key issue for population where the dynamic development of IoT technologies is bringing different useful benefits, but this fast development must be carefully monitored and evaluated from an environmental point of view to limit the presence of harmful impacts and ensure the smart utilization of limited global resources. Significant research efforts are needed in the previous sense to carefully investigate the pros and cons of IoT technologies. This review editorial is partially directed on the research contributions presented at the 4th International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Technologies held in Split and Bol, Croatia, in 2019 (SpliTech 2019) as well as on recent findings from literature. The SpliTech2019 conference was a valuable event that successfully linked different engineering professions, industrial experts and finally researchers from academia. The focus of the conference was directed towards key conference tracks such as Smart City, Energy/Environment, e-Health and Engineering Modelling. The research presented and discussed at the SpliTech2019 conference helped to understand the complex and intertwined effects of IoT technologies on societies and their potential effects on sustainability in general. Various application areas of IoT technologies were discussed as well as the progress made. Four main topical areas were discussed in the herein editorial, i.e. latest advancements in the further fields: (i) IoT technologies in Sustainable Energy and Environment, (ii) IoT enabled Smart City, (iii) E-health – Ambient assisted living systems (iv) IoT technologies in Transportation and Low Carbon Products. The main outcomes of the review introductory article contributed to the better understanding of current technological progress in IoT application areas as well as the environmental implications linked with the increased application of IoT products.
