Evaluation of continuous constant current and continuous pulsed current in sweat induction for cystic fibrosis diagnosis

Abstract: BackgroundThe sweat test (ST) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF). However, little is known about sweat induction using different types of currents and waves. In this context, our objective was to develop a device to induce sweat and compare the use of continuous constant current (CCC) and continuous pulsed current (CPC) in individuals with CF and healthy controls.MethodsA prospective cross-sectional study with experimental intervention. The variables of gender, ethnicity, age, and b… Show more

“…Along with previously mentioned studies, sweat collection in newborns and young infants is entirely feasible. Therefore, sweat testing should not be delayed in infants with a positive CF NBS test because appropriate collection procedures can minimize failed tests, reduce costs and parents' anxiety, and benefits the health system (12).…”

“…The sweat rates at the stimulated area and the surrounding skin areas were characterized after a 5 min iontophoresis with pilocarpine and carbachol (Figure k,l). In addition to novel form factors, variation in the current profile for enhanced sweat volume was studied and a sinusoidal pulsed current profile was suggested for use in patients with sweat problems …”
