Paper or cardboard with porous surfaces have been transformed into oil- and water-resistant surfaces by coating them with nano-PET to fill the pores and increase their ability to absorb oil while keeping the fibers from swelling. Experimental results show that using PET nanoparticle solution as coating for cartoon have a strong effect on its mechanical properties especially as confining properties. Cartoon coated show high resistance against water absorption for cartoon with three layers of paint (two sides) where the ratio reach to 41.7% as compare with 16.4% for cartoon without coating also show high confining properties against two kinds of oils (cooking and machine), where the experimental result for the cartoon with two layers of paint lowest absorption for cooking oil about 0.018 g compared with carton without coating with 0.122g while for machine oil carton with three-layer paint (two side) show the difference in weight about 0.012g and without coating its about 0.026g. Furthermore, high binding energy between the PET nanoparticle solution with the cardboard molecules, which refers that the compatibility between the surface of the treated carton and the PET polymer has occurred, providing a good adhesion between carton and coating solution.

Paper is a material whose mechanical properties are highly dependent on humidity and temperature, naturally building the relationship between the stiffness and strength of corrugated board and changing weather conditions. In this paper, attention is focused on the dependence of the physical properties of the cardboard on changes in humidity and temperature, which undergo dynamic fluctuations both during the production of corrugated board and during its storage. Two techniques were used to test this effect, namely numerical homogenization and global sensitivity analysis. Both methods were implemented to determine the theoretical relationships between the change in humidity and/or temperature in each layer of corrugated board and its global bending, compression, and shear stiffness. The procedure was used to analyze different types of 5-ply and 3-ply cardboard. The obtained results allowed the authors to build a complete map of the relationship between the change in humidity of selected layers and the strength characteristics of the full assembly.

In this research, we conducted a wear test on inkjet-printed silver conductors using different loads and counter materials (two paperboards, brushed steel sheet, and sandpaper) with similar surface roughness values. The conductor’s reliability was characterized by resistance measurement, the failures and tested counter materials were analyzed using an optical microscope, profilometer, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). It was found that the counter material has a dominant impact on a conductor’s reliability and failure mechanism compared with load. The conductors were exceptionally reliable but subject to adhesive wear when tested by paperboards. They were also highly reliable when tested by brushed steel sheet although the silver became severely detached, and the conductivity was lost suddenly when a major scratch was caused by two-body and three-body abrasive wear mechanisms. Sandpaper rubbing caused the most severe silver detachment and quick loss of conductivity, as a large amount of small-size (5 – 15 µm) silicon carbide (SiC) particles with sharp edges and corners caused a dense cutting effect via two-body abrasive wear (by cutting) mechanism. Additionally, the failures in almost all samples occurred in the areas in contact with the counter edges, suggesting that failure was accelerated by the edge effect. This study proves that inkjet-printed electronics on the investigated paperboard is exceptionally durable when rubbed by paperboards and steel sheets, and thus provides a reliable solution to intelligent packaging. To promote intelligent packaging, more paperboards, as well as approaches for reducing the edge effect can be investigated.
