This research aims to discover between-region variability in household energy consumption behaviors, using multilevel modeling with data from Residential Energy Consumption Survey in 2009. Where past research focuses on the physical characteristics of housing, our effort in this research centers on between-region variability and micro-level determinants of residential energy usage. We found significant between-region variability with household energy usage across the U.S. Results suggest that the association between heating degree days and energy consumption varies depending on the type of climate that a household lives in. Further, household energy usage is significantly associated with the race of the householder and income. In the discussion section, we connect this outcome to racial disparities between whites and non-whites in location choice, access to housing, and residential stratification. Moreover, the structure of our research reveals the necessity of multilevel modeling in gaining an accurate picture of residential energy consumption for more efficient energy conservation policy.

The extensive energy use in the European building sector creates opportunities for implementing energy conservation measures (ECMs) in residential buildings. If ECM are implemented in buildings that are connected to a district heating (DH) system, the operation of DH plants may be affected, which in turn may change both revenue and electricity production in cogeneration plants. In this study a local energy system, containing a DH supplier and its customer, has been analysed when implementing three ECMs: heat load control, attic insulation and electricity savings. This study is unique since it analyses economic and CO 2 impacts of the ECMs in both a user and a supplier perspective in combination with a deregulated European electricity market. Results show that for the local energy system electricity savings should be prioritised over a reduction in DH use, both from an economic and a global CO 2 perspective. For the DH supplier attic insulation demonstrates unprofitable results, even though this measure affects the expensive peak load boilers most. Heat load control is however financially beneficial for both the DH supplier and the residences. Furthermore, the relation between the fixed and variable DH costs is highlighted as a key factor for the profitability of the ECMs.

Jordan is a country with highly fossil fuel deficiency and thus other energy sources are needed to be explored. Solar energy in Jordan is highly recognized as a good source of energy and an excellent substitute to the fossil fuel. The solar energy in this article is obtained via data bases and modeling techniques for the specified place coordinate and angle of inclination. The angles of sun irradiations are different throughout the year; therefore solar energy needs to be magnified by optimizing the angle of inclination of solar cells. In this research, the optimized angles throughout the year are obtained to be in the range: 10˚ -60˚. Solar energy can serve the residential building, the findings of this research show that every 1 m 2 of the solar cell may contribute to about 60% -70% of customer needs of electricity throughout the year. The application of solar energy concept in the design of building will play an important role in energy sustainability.
