An experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of forty-nine chrysanthemum genotypes for desirable horticultural traits at ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Hesaraghatta Lake Post, Bengaluru from 2015-17. Significant variations were observed for various vegetative and flowering traits during both years. The results from the pooled data of two years showed that among the genotypes evaluated, maximum plant height was recorded in Arka Chandrakant (69.59 cm), maximum flower diameter in Arka Ravikiran (9.00 cm) and maximum weight of 100 flowers in Marigold (925.04 g). The genotype Roopanjali produced maximum number of flowers per plant (1199.17). Pusa Anmol recorded the minimum number of days to first flowering (60.48 days) while Roopanjali the longest period to first flowering (201.56 days). The genotypes with superior vegetative and floral traits desirable for the different segments of the floriculture industry like loose flower, cut flower and pot plant trade can be utilized in further improvement of chrysanthemum.

A field experiment entitled “Appraisal's genotypes on water absorption, transpiration loss at senescence stage and genetic correlation of Chrysanthemum morifolium” was conducted at experimental orchard, department of Horticulture, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar (Haryana) during the 2016-17 in winter season to identify the suitable variety for successful cultivation as well as vase life of Chrysanthemum flower. Fifteen Genotypes namely, Aparajita, Anastasia, Braca Splendid, Charlia, Celtic, Cologne, Fortune, HF-164, Paladov Sunny, Paiwer-W, Paladov Dark, Papaya, Tocovar- 6, Vanilla Sorbet and White Double were selected for the evaluation. The significant responses in water absorption, transpiration loss at senescence stage and flower vase life were observed in White Double, Cologne, Charlia and Celtic. The maximum water absorption and transpiration loss were recorded in genotype White Double (116.83g and 72.20 ml. respectively) whereas maximum fresh weight was recorded with the genotype Cologne (120.00 g) while genotype White Double had longest vase life (20.66 days). The maximum per cent of opened flowers were noticed in the genotype Charlia (92.45 %) while maximum unopened flowers were noticed in genotype Celtic (21.86%) and the significant genetic correlation between different parameters and vase life of flowers were noted during experimentation.

Little is known about the stability of plant chimeras after exposure to liquid nitrogen. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cryopreservation on the cytogenetic and genetic stability, as well as vegetative and generative growth of chrysanthemums that are a solid mutant ('Richmond') or periclinal chimeras ('Lady Orange' and 'Lady Salmon'). The following encapsulation-dehydration protocol of shoot tip cryopreservation was applied: 0.09 M sucrose concentration and 10 µM abscisic acid during a two-week preculture, followed by a 4-day osmotic dehydration and 3-hour desiccation. Both, the cryopreservation-recovered and control plants were characterized by the same relative DNA content and chromosome number (ploidy level). By applying RAPD and ISSR markers, 18 and 1 and 0 polymorphic loci within cryopreservation-derived 'Lady Orange' and 'Lady Salmon' and 'Richmond' were detected, respectively. The recovered after cryopreservation and control plants had the same colour, diameter and fresh weight of inflorescences, as well as length of ray florets. Cryopreservation also did not affect the flowering time in chrysanthemum. The biochemical assay did not reveal any alternations in the level of anthocyanins and carotenoids in flowers. It was noted, however, that some of the leaves of the cryopreservation-recovered plants were shorter and/or narrower. They had a reduced chlorophyll content, and their internodes were shorter when compared to the untreated control. The inflorescences of 'Lady Salmon' opened slower, but faded faster. In conclusion, these results illustrate the practicability of a cryopreservation method that completely protects the chimera chrysanthemum identity. Key messageCryopreservation via encapsulation-dehydration technique affects the vegetative growth of chrysanthemum during the first cultivation season but does not disturb its chimeric structure.
