Evaluation of choroidal thickness changes after phacoemulsification surgery

Abstract: PurposeThe aim of the study was to analyze the effects of uneventful phacoemulsification surgery on choroidal thickness (CT) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).MethodsIn this prospective study, 38 eyes of 38 patients having phacoemulsification surgery were included. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmologic examination, including preoperative axial length (AXL) measurement with optical biometry and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement preoperatively and 1 month postoperatively. … Show more

“…A number of publications have reported the possible influence of cataract surgery on the choroid [ 2 , 3 , 9 , 10 ]. Aslan BS et al [ 9 ] have investigated the effects of uneventful phacoemulsification surgery on choroidal thickness using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). They found that phacoemulsification may cause significant increase in choroid at all regions evaluated at 1 month postoperative follow-up.…”

“…There is scarce, inconclusive literature on this subject using enhanced-depth imaging with SD-OCT (Table 6). Some authors report a significant increase in choroidal thickness after surgery, 7,[15][16][17][18][19] whereas others report no significant change in choroidal thickness. 8,19 Noda et al noted that the changes in choroidal thickness persisted significantly even 6 months after surgery.…”

“…16 Potential causes may include ultrasound power used during surgery, intraoperative intraocular pressure fluctuations, and the intraoperative photostress from microscope light. 17,22 Participants were prescribed steroidal anti-inflammatory eye drops postoperatively. It is possible that choroidal thickness would have been more pronounced had anti-inflammatory drops not been given.…”

“…Recent investigations show that phacoemulsification has effect on the choroid as well. Some studies report that the choroidal thickness is increased after phacoemulsification [16][17][18] while others describe a tendency only 19,20 .…”
