Evaluation of chemotherapy response in patients with advanced head and neck cancer using [F‐18]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography

Abstract: Background. [F-18]Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)positron emission tomography (PET) can measure the metabolic activity of tissues; FDG-PET may be able to predict response to chemotherapy by identifying changes in tumor metabolism. Measurement of response to treatment may help improve survival in the management of advanced head and neck cancer. We evaluated this particular use of FDG-PET in patients participating in a neoadjuvant organ-preservation protocol using taxol and carboplatin and compared pathologic response … Show more

“…Changes in FDG-PET imaging following neoadjuvant chemotherapy are predictive of histologic response in patients with breast carcinoma [10,11], head and neck carcinoma [12], lymphoma [13,14], and gastrointestinal stromal tumors [15].…”

“…They found in eight out of nine patients (89%) with persistent or recurrent disease elevated FDG uptake after RT. Lowe et al (1997) reported a mean reduction of 82% in FDG uptake in those who achieved a complete remission compared to a decrease of 34% uptake in those who demonstrated recurrent disease.…”

“…Au moins 95 % des carcinomes des VADS de volume égal ou supérieur à 1 cm 3 fixent de manière significative le traceur [9], et cette fixation est fonction de la vascularisation et du degré du métabolisme du tissu étudié. Les micrométastases de dimension inférieure à 8 mm donnent de faux négatifs [20,25] …”
