Evaluation of characteristics of the craniofacial complex and dental maturity in girls with central precocious puberty

Abstract: CPP had an effect on the anteroposterior growth of the mandible in the craniofacial complex and the rotation of the mandibular plane angle. Early maturation of the mandibular teeth was observed in girls with CPP.

“…Many studies have been conducted to identify the screening or predictive factors of CPP. The relationship remains controversial between the CPP and dental factors such as dental maturity [10,19], dental age [11], malocclusion [12], and mandibular growth pattern [10]. At time of PP onset, many children with mixed-dentition visited dental clinics to have their dental development evaluated.…”

“…At the chronologic age of six to seven, before puberty begins, mixed dentition starts as the deciduous teeth which are replaced with permanent teeth. Since the timing of PP diagnosis is an important dental turning point, many researches have been conducted on the relationship between PP and dental development such as tooth eruption, tooth growth, and jaw growth [9][10][11][12]. However, the relationship between PP and the dental parameter is controversial because the above parameters vary, even in individuals without PP.…”

“…In idiopathic precocious puberty, Roberts et al found that dental ages were delayed in relation to their chronological age in children [27]. Conversely, the recent study by Lee et al revealed early maturation of the mandibular teeth in girls with central precocious puberty [28]. As far as delayed puberty is concerned, Gaethofs et al observed significant retardation of dental maturation in boys with CDGP.…”

“…The control group included 48 normal healthy girls (mean age, 8.6 ± 0.7 years) who visited the Department of Orthodontics for orthodontic treatment and had no history of hormone treatment or growth problems. Based on data from previous studies, 7,14 the numbers of girls in each group were determined via G* Power ver. 3.1.9.2 (Dusseldorf University, Dusseldorf, Germany), with a pvalue < 0.05 indicating statistical significance.…”

“…Generally, the onset of sexual maturation before the age of 8 years in girls and 9 years in boys is considered abnormal. 6,7 Precocious puberty is classified as either central (GnRH-dependent) or peripheral (GnRH-independent), and central precocious puberty (CPP) accounts for approximately 80% of the cases.…”
