“…We and other authors have shown that overall advanced nodal disease leads to regional and distant metastatic disease 14–16 . However, data from the more abundant advanced supraglottic and pyriform cancers cannot be transposed to that of the glottic tumors 14,17–19 .…”

“…MRND and RND emerged as the preferred therapeutic procedures for clinically positive neck nodes, regardless of the clinical staging of N [7]. Tomik et al [14] analyzed the clinicopathological data of 1,400 patients with laryngeal carcinoma and cN0 or cN+ neck status submitted to 2,270 neck dissections of whom 2,147 underwent MRND and 123 RND, followed by RT in 639 (45.6%) cases. They found 460 (32.9%) pN+, which were unilateral in 75.6% of cases.…”

“…NRs occurred in 4 SND and 2 RND. With the exception of Tomik et al [14], most of the studies compare data of neck dissections in patients affected by H&N cancers of different primary site. This is the first study whose focus was confined to patients affected by laryngeal cancer with clinical evidence of cervical metastases treated by individualized therapeutic neck dissection.…”

“…Nonetheless the importance of evaluating the pre‐laryngeal and pre‐cricoid region for nodal metastasis have been emphasized from the 1960s, especially when operating on patients with transglottic and subglottic cancers, or dissecting the thyroid isthmus and pyramidal lobe 7, 8. Data from studies examining the incidence and significance of DN positivity in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are summarized in Table I 2, 3, 7, 9–18. Nine of these studies have examined an unselected group of patients undergoing laryngectomy for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal tumors 2, 3, 7, 9–14.…”
