Objectives: In contrast to two-dimensional planar images, a measuring point is hardly repeatedly determined in a CBCT image when alveolar bone loss is assessed. Thus, the aim of the present study was to propose a six-site measuring method, which is closely related to anatomical structure, for the evaluation of alveolar bone loss in CBCT images. Methods: 150 measuring points in 11 molars and 14 premolars from 6 patients (2 males and 4 females) were included. CBCT images of the teeth were acquired prior to periodontal surgery. Four observers measured the distances between cemento-enamel junctions and the apical bases of the periodontal bone defect at the mesio-buccal, mid-buccal, disto-buccal, mesio-lingual/palatal, mid-lingual/palatal and disto-lingual/palatal sites in CBCT images. Direct measurements of the six sites were correspondingly obtained in the subsequent periodontal surgeries. Differences between the distances measured in the CBCT images and during the surgery were analysed. Interobserver and intraobserver variances were tested. Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the surgical and CBCT measurements (p 5 0.84). Diagnostic coincidence rates of four observers were 86.7%, 87.3%, 88.7% and 88.0%, respectively. The interobserver (p 5 0.95) and intraobserver (p 5 0.30) variances were not significant. Conclusions: The six-site measuring method validated in the present study may be a useful three-dimensional measuring method for the evaluation of periodontal disease.

Objective: To determine the accuracy of various cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) devices in assessing the buccal bone in anterior teeth. Material and Methods: A skull encased in tissue equivalent material was imaged with six CBCT devices: 3D Accuitomo 170 (J. Morita, Japan), CS 9000 3D (Carestream Dental, France), CS 9300 (Carestream Dental, France), Eagle 3D (Dabi Atlante, Brazil), i-CAT Classic (Imaging Sciences International, USA) and Orthophos XG 3D (Sirona Dental System, USA). The exposure and acquisition protocols were determined using the manufacturer's guidelines, the voxel size adjusted as close as possible to 0.2 mm. Cross-sectional images were evaluated randomly, and the buccal bone was assessed. Results: The statistics were calculated based on a logistic regression model with the significance level set at 5%. All CBCT devices showed high accuracy; however, observers noted that the accuracy and sensitivity of CS 9300 device were slightly superior. Conclusion: The diagnostic performance of all CBCT devices was high for the evaluation of buccal bone in anterior teeth. When the clinical usefulness of an imaging modality is equivalent, the choice of appropriate imaging should be directed towards the modality that delivers the least radiation dose to the patient for a specific diagnostic task.

De todos os ensinamentos que recebemos durante nossa vida, um dos mais importantes, sem dúvida, é fazer amigos. Porque a amizade não é algo que se consiga à força. Precisa que aja uma cumplicidade de ambas as partes. Cada amigo é como uma planta, com suas particularidades. Algumas são mais delicadas e precisam de um cuidado especial, umas são antigas e fortes com raízes já bem firmes, outras são mais recentes mas que surpreendem com sua importância, e também tem aquelas que não precisam dos seus cuidados diários, mas que você sabe que se for lá, ela estará para lhe receber. Infelizmente, por muitas vezes precisamos nos afastar de um jardim para plantar novas árvores em outro terreno, mas não quer dizer que precisamos deixar as nossas plantas morrerem. Podemos deixá-las sob os cuidados de outro jardineiro por um tempo ou até podemos retornar de vez em quando para regá-las. Mas o mais importante é saber que cada árvore é uma semente de amor plantada que nunca deve ser esquecida. RESUMO Objetivos: Avaliar a espessura da tábua óssea e nível de crista vestibular e lingual de segundos pré-molares e molares após o tratamento ortodôntico em pacientes com perda do primeiro molar inferior. Além de investigar presença de fenestrações e o comportamento dos parâmetros clínicos periodontais. Métodos: A amostra foi composta de 36 hemiarcos os quais foram divididos em 3 grupos: Grupo Abertura (GA-15 molares verticalizados), Grupo Fechamento (GF-12 molares mesializados para área de rebordo atrófico) e Grupo Controle (GC-9 hemiarcos sem perdas dentárias). Após a movimentação, os pacientes foram submetidos a exames de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC) seguindo protocolos de 0,2 mm de voxel a 6 cm de FOV, no aparelho i-CAT Cone-Beam 3-D Dental Imaging System. Todas as medições foram realizadas no Dolphin em cortes parassagitais e avaliadas nas faces vestibular e lingual. Presença de fenestrações, posição do ápice radicular e recobrimento radicular também foram avaliados. Além disso, profundidade de sondagem, índice de sangramento gengival, recessão e índice de placa foram mensurados antes e depois do tratamento. A comparação intergrupos do nível da crista e espessura óssea foi realizado com o ANOVA seguido do teste de Tukey. A comparação intergrupos para a presença de fenestração e a posição do ápice radicular foi avaliada usando o Qui-quadrado enquanto o recobrimento radicular foi comparado pelo teste de Kruskal-wallis e Mann-Whitney. Os parâmetros clínicos periodontais foram comparados por meio do teste t pareado (intragrupos) e ANOVA e Tukey (intergrupos). Resultados: Não houve diferença significante entre os grupos para nenhuma medição realizada no segundo pré-molar. Houve um menor nível da crista óssea vestibular e lingual para o grupo fechamento. Não houve diferença para a espessura da tábua óssea e para a presença de fenestrações entre os grupos.
