Evaluation of blood pressure in children

Abstract: Overweight and obesity are increasingly common, and are major determinants of high blood pressure in children, in both the developed and developing world. Initial evaluation of the hypertensive child must include carefully confirming if they are hypertensive using published reference data for blood pressure in children, and increasingly through ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Left ventricular hypertrophy based on echocardiography remains the most widely used indirect marker of hypertensive end organ chan… Show more

“…Overweight and obesity are associated with increased IMT in children with or without essential hypertension [34,[36][37][38]. Likewise, increased arterial stiffness has also been reported to be more common in hypertensive children than in normotensive ones [39].…”

“…The greater prevalence of overweight and obesity in the boys of our sample is striking, but the use of a small sample limits the generalization of our findings. In terms of the greater number of cases of HBP found in our sample, both systolic and diastolic, it is important to realize that we used duplicated BP measures and that, in general, the prevalence of HBP decreases when more than two readings are taken during one visit (the first reading is ruled out and the last readings are averaged) and when subsequent visits are paid to an already reported case of pre-or hypertension [43,44].…”
