Evaluation of biological activities of two essential oils as a safe environmental bioinsecticides: case of Eucalyptus globulus and Rosmarinus officinalis

Abstract: All works of this article were conducted to investigate chemical composition and insecticidal and antimicrobial properties of Eucalyptus globulus and Rosmarinus officinalis essential oils isolated by hydro-distillation of its aerial parts. Analysis of the essential oils on the basis of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/FID and GC/MS) revealed the presence of 82 organic volatiles representing 98.63% of the total constituents of Eucalyptus globulus and the presence of 45 organic volatiles representing… Show more

“…The global demand for essential oils has currently risen in several industrial sectors [1][2][3][4]. Essential oils are part of the extract of aromatic plants that are distributed in all countries of the world, where they are considered an imperative element of traditional medicine systems [5,6]. Essential oils are extracted mainly by steam distillation, but can also be prepared using a variety of contemporary techniques that include managing a number of processes, including milling, solvent, temperature, pressure, humidity, etc.…”

“…Trying to solve these issues, in this work, a chemical approach has been performed using fractional distillation, a method that is extensively used in industry (e.g., biorefineries, desalination, or separation of contaminants, among many others) and whose base is the separation of components by their boiling points (i.e., using heat) [74][75][76][77][78]. In fact, some variants like hydrodistillation (HD) and steam distillation (SD) have been one of the most widely used techniques in the extraction of EOs; and successfully applied to clove oil extraction [46,[79][80][81][82]. However, some other innovative techniques have also been applied to extract EOs from clove oil, such as microwave-assisted hydrodistillation, microwaveassisted steam distillation (i.e., MDAs), hydrodistillation assisted by ohmic heating (HDA), or supercritical fluid extraction assisted by cold pressing (SFEA).…”

“…LD50 values are widely acknowledged as a means of evaluating the toxicity of a substance. Within this study, the tested population consisted of insects, and the LD50 values were employed to assess the effectiveness of the products synthesized from Mentha pulegium as insecticides [ 52 ].…”
