Abstract: Bio-Intensive Pest Management (BIPM) was tested in rice var. Swarna at the Instructional Research Farm and field behind the Biocontrol laboratory, IGKV, Raipur, Chhattisgarh for two years i.e 2018-19 and 2019-20 in comparison with farmer's practice and control as per the protocol given by ICAR-NBAIR, Bengaluru, under AICRP on Biocontrol. This study aimed to examine postharvest losses encountered by banana cultivators in the northeastern Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya across three discrete temporal phases: prior to the onset of COVID-19, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the aftermath of COVID-19. A total of 100 households, distributed among the selected villages with 10 households per village, were chosen through a random selection process. Furthermore, the current study evaluates the impact of diverse socio-economic variables on these losses through the application of an ordered probit model. The findings of the study suggested that, during both pre- and post-COVID 19 periods, the postharvest losses of banana farmer ranges between 1 to 32%, whereas, it was between 34 to 70% during COVID 19 period. Moreover, the study argued that the postharvest losses of banana farmers were influenced by the locational indicator, education, farming experience, land pattern as well as some other production and cost related factors of farmers. Despite this, the factors that influenced postharvest losses exhibited a significant change in direction across the various time periods. The study suggests that in less developed regions such as North East India, decreasing postharvest losses could play a vital role in alleviating poverty and fostering rural advancement by creating more opportunities for agribusiness livelihoods.

Black gram (Vigna mungo L.), is one of the most important short duration pulse crops grown in India. Powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe polygoni is a major destructive disease causing drastic economic yield loss upto 50 per cent. In this present study to evaluation of different treatments on the management of powdery mildew on Black gram. Among five mangrove species tested, the leaf extract of Rhiphora apiculata out performed well recording maximum inhibition of conidial germination. In case of fungicides, Azoxystrobin @ 0.1% significantly reduced the conidial germination. The bio-agent Ampelomyces quisqualis was found to be effective at 0.5 per cent concentration against the pathogen. The susceptible variety ADT-3 was raised in both pot and field for management practices. The treatment involving combination of bio-agent and botanical i.e., foliar spraying of A. quisqualis @ 0.5% on 43 DAS AND 53 DAS + foliar spraying of R. apiculata @ 15% on 43 DAS+ 53 DAS recorded minimum per cent disease index in both pot (18.94 %) and field trial (14.50%). The synergistic effect of A. quisqualis and R. apiculata significantly reduces the disease incidence and considerably improve the biometric of blackgram in both pot and field trials are approximately equal to fungicide application.

Impact of sewage water irrigation on agricultural soil

The rapidly increasing population growth and the steady increase in water requirements for agricultural and industrial development have placed severe stress on the water resources available and the long term use of sewage water for irrigation highly affects soil properties. In this study soil samples were collected from a cauliflower field prior and after sewage water irrigation, and the impact of sewage water irrigation on physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil was compared. For this, tested were pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Organic Carbon, available Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Copper, Manganese, and microbial activity. Soil microbial biomass carbon, basal soil respiration, total viable count of bacteria, coliform population, Pseudomonas species, and Azotobacter significantly increased after sewage water irrigation as compared to prior to irrigation. Nevertheless, the bulk density and Rhizobium species of the soil flooded with sewage water was decreased relative to the same characteristics prior to irrigation. Cauliflower yield was significantly increased when sewage water flooded field as compared to the tube well water flooded field (i.e., water delivered via an iron pipe). Escherichia coli contamination was greater in sewage water and groundwater that can pose health risks for the nearby communities, to farmers and consumer of farm products. Hence, the efficient use of sewage and municipal wastewater successfully increase water resource for irrigation and may help in expanding agricultural production. But excessive use of sewage water may also affect the soil flora and fertility.
