Evaluation of benzimidazole resistance status in Ascaridia galli

Abstract: Susceptability of Ascaridia galli to benzimidazole (BZ) was investigated using faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), in ovo larval development test (LDT) and genetic markers (mutations at codons 167, 198 and 200 of β-tubulin gene). Six flocks (F1-F6) of a commercial laying hen farm with different number of exposure to BZ were recruited. The FECR was calculated by analyzing individual faeces (F1, F2, F4 and F5) before and 10 days after treatment. The LDT was performed on parasite eggs from pooled samples fro… Show more

“…The benzimidazoles, such as fenbendazole and flubendazole, have the same mode of action and are currently the only active substances licensed for use in laying hens and poultry (pheasants and turkeys) in the European Union countries [ 32 ]. In particular, various products marketed in Italy containing flubendazole or fenbendazole (i.e., Panacur AquaSol ® , Intervet International B.V., AN Boxmeer, The Netherlands, Flubenvet ® , Elanco GmbH, Bad Homburg, Germany, Gallifen ® , Huvepharma NV, Sofia, Bulgaria, etc.)…”

“…equorum and A . galli ) [1214], these changes were not found, even in parasite populations that were treated many times a year. This suggests that these SNPs may not correspond to the main mechanism of benzimidazole resistance in these species.…”

“…lumbricoides , a mutation at codon 167 was detected at high frequencies in Haiti, Kenya, and Panama in populations that were treated with benzimidazoles [10]; however, mutations at codons 198 or 200 have never been found in this parasite, even though it has already been investigated [7,8,11]. In veterinary ascarids, such as Parascaris equorum and Ascaris galli , these mutations have never been found, even in populations that were constantly treated with benzimidazoles [1214].…”

“…Nevertheless, in the case of the benzimidazoles, a well-developed understanding of the resistance mechanism has enabled molecular tools to be established for AR detection, which can be used to elucidate patterns of spread of resistance on a broad scale for ruminants [58]. The situation in pigs and poultry, however, is barely known [59].…”
