Evaluation of beef breeds for rangeland weaner production in Zimbabwe 2. Productivity of crossbred cows and heterosis estimates

Abstract: Crossbred cows were evaluated for reproductive performance and live weight, and for pre-weaning growth and viability of progeny sired by seven unrelated breeds. They were also evaluated on overall productivity expressed as weight of weaned calf per cow mated per year, per 100 kg of cow per year and per 100 kg metabolic weight of cow per year. The cows comprised reciprocals of Africander with Mashona, Nkone, Brahman and Sussex, one-way crosses sired by Sussex out of Mashona, Nkone and Brahman dams, and by Charo… Show more

“…The high positive Afrikaner maternal direct effect contradicts reports that seem to indicate that Sanga and Zebu type dams restrict the BW of their calves (Roberson et al, 1986;Comerford et al, 1987;Tawonezvi et al, 1988;Scholtz et al, 1990;Van Zyl et al, 1992;Franke, 1994), even when mated to late maturing Bos taurus sires with a positive additive effect on BW (Alenda et al, 1980) by way of a large negative maternal effect (Roberson et al, 1986).…”

“…Although results of the present study indicate that Landim is a productive breed by its own merit, more information is needed about strategies to improve their contribution to farm productivity, either by selection or by crossing with other breeds. For example, the poorer productivity of Africander germplasm was also detected in crossbred offspring in Zimbabwe (Tawonezvi et al, 1988b). Crossbreeding of Sanga breeds with European or specialized tropical breeds to optimally combine the adaptability of local breeds (e.g., reproductive rate, disease resistance) with the greater beef or milk potentials of other breeds is acknowledged as a rational way to increase productivity in difficult environments (Ansell, 1985).…”
