Evaluation of Attractant Composition, Application Rate, and Trap Type for Potential Mass Trapping of Ips typographus (L.)

Abstract: This study focused on elucidating the possibilities of improving current trapping methods for Ips typographus (Linnaeus, 1758). Three field experiments were conducted simultaneously in one study area in the German federal state of Saxony. A comparison of six different commercial attractants revealed a significant superiority of Typosan®, especially for adult beetles after hibernation in the phase of their first swarming. It also attracted fewer individuals of Thanasimus spp. than the other highly attractive pr… Show more

“…This approach has the advantage of balancing different population densities as well as varying trapping periods during the study. Possibly biased analysis results due to very small trapping numbers were avoided by including only collection dates with at least 100 caught individuals (Heber et al, 2021; Helbig & Heber, 2020; Wehnert, 2014; Wehnert & Müller, 2012). Carabidae catch was analysed using absolute values due to the consistently small trapping numbers.…”

“…The design was based on the trap circle methodology, which was also applied in other field studies comparing different attractants and trap types (Heber et al, 2021; Helbig & Heber, 2020; Wehnert, 2014; Wehnert & Müller, 2012). For each trial, five trap circles were set up with a minimum distance of 50 m from each other.…”

“…When the newly developed dispensers were tested to optimize their composition and construction, the experiments with randomization of several tested baits in traps took place. These experiments had a shorter duration since the qualitative comparison was sufficient when the particular number of randomizations was achieved [34,45,65,67,73,74].…”

“…These signals enable beetles to locate a mate or host tree by providing intraspecific and interspecific chemical information (Bergström, 2007). Aggregation pheromone components, produced by male beetles after successful colonization (Birgersson et al, 1984;Ramakrishnan et al, 2022), have been employed for monitoring and controlling I. typographus populations (Heber et al, 2021). Furthermore, recent research has focused on the management potential of kairomones, compounds originating from both host spruce trees and non-host trees, e.g., broadleaf trees (Zhang and Schlyter, 2004;Jakuš et al, 2022).…”
