Evaluation of Antioxidant Properties of Phaulopsis fascisepala C.B.Cl. (Acanthaceae)

Abstract: The antioxidant activities of crude extract of Phaulopsis fascisepala leaf were evaluated and compared with α-tocopherol and BHT as synthetic antioxidants and ascorbic acid as natural-based antioxidant. In vitro, we studied its antioxidative activities, radical-scavenging effects, Fe2+-chelating ability and reducing power. The total phenolic content was determined and expressed in gallic acid equivalent. The extract showed variable activities in all of these in vitro tests. The antioxidant effect of P. fascise… Show more

“…IC 50 values (concentration of sample required to scavenge 50% free radical) were found to be the least in GA (0.110±0.014 mg/mL), followed by ButR (0.211±0.017 mg/mL), BHA (0.214±0.004 mg/mL), TA (0.214±0.019 mg/mL) and TR (0.225±0.002 mg/mL). EAR (0.611±0.072 mg/mL) and PolyR (0.816± 0.007 mg/mL) also showed good activity compared to AA (0.413±0.041 mg/mL).…”

“…Ethanol was used for baseline correction. The free radical scavenging activity is usually expressed as percentage of DPPH inhibition but also by the antioxidant concentration required for 50% DPPH reduction (IC 50 ). Basically, a higher DPPH radical scavenging activity is associated with a lower IC 50 value.…”

“…Water soluble antioxidant potentials are determined based on the traditional method in intake of plant extracts therapeutically. The IC 50 values of extracts were calculated for DPPH and NO inhibition assays to compare the antioxidant activities at different concentrations as described by many authors (Adesegun et al, 2009;Marwah et al, 2007).The results of three in vitro assays (DPPH, FRAP, NO) for antioxidant properties of the 10 plant extracts are given in Table 1.…”
