Evaluation of Antimicrobial, Cytotoxicity, and Dyeing Properties of Prodigiosin Produced by Serratia Marcescens Strain Jar8

Abstract: Objective: Prodigiosin is a red tripyrrole pigment which is synthesized as a secondary metabolite by biotypes A1, A2, and A6 of Serretia marcescens. This study was aimed to optimize production parameters for prodigiosin pigment produced by S. marcescens strain JAR8 and to determine its antimicrobial, cytotoxicity, and dyeing properties. Methods:The effect of various media components, process parameters (temperature, pH, incubation period), and other supplements was investigated, and the maximum production of p… Show more

“…Results of TLC developed with solvent system E showed 5 bands (Table 3) [7], system C [28] and system D [29] had shown no similar results: only one band with Rf varying between 0.10 and 0.14 depending to the strains (Table 3) for solvent system A, one large band (Rf: 0.58) for solvent system C and two bands (Rf: 0.56 and 0.75) for solvent system D (Not shown). This comparative analysis showed that the studied pigments, even their similarity with anthracyclines of prodigiosin family, exhibit different TLC profiles and should contain structural differences.…”

“…The growing interest in microbial pigments is due to their natural character, properties like anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous, anti-fungal, biodegradable, and non-toxic [3][4][5][6]. Moreover, microbial pigments are preferable rather than plant pigments for being independent of weather conditions, fast growth, cost-effective, and the percentage of pigment production can be enhanced by medium optimization and addition of low-cost substrates like rice bran, husk, whey, urea, and molasses [7][8][9].…”
