Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of Terfezia arenaria extracts collected from Saharan desert against bacteria and filamentous fungi

Abstract: Different desert truffles, collected from Algerian Saharan soils, were identified and their capacity to produce bioactive substances with antimicrobial activity was analyzed. Based on morphological characterization using Melzer's reagent staining, the collected strains were identified as Terfezia arenaria. The bioactive substances from T. arenaria were extracted using the following techniques: maceration with methanol and Soxhlet with dichloromethane. The former led to a yield much higher than that of the latt… Show more

“…Among the most interesting properties of Terfezia species are their antioxidant (Dahham et al, 2018;Dundar et al, 2012), enzymatic (Benaceur et al, 2020;Pérez-Gilabert et al, 2005, 2014, antibiotic (Harir et al, 2019;Janakat et al, 2004Janakat et al, , 2005Neggaz et al, 2018), anti-proliferative and anti-cancer activities (Table S3) (Al Obaydi et al, 2020;Dahham et al, 2018;Tejedor-Calvo et al, 2020). Several species of Terfezia produce common food antioxidants, such as tocopherol (α and δ), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and propyl gallate (Martínez-Tomé et al, 2014;Tejedor-Calvo et al, 2020).…”

“…Some studies have shown that this species, like other desert truffles, is rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and dietary fibre, making it a suitable addition to a balanced diet [19][20][21][22][23][24]. T. arenaria has also been reported to have important biological activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and antitumoral [23,[25][26][27]. Despite the increasing interest in exploring the nutritional and chemical composition of desert truffles [19][20][21][22], T. arenaria's consumption and trade are still limited to small regions where this species is native.…”
