Evaluation of antibacterial activity of the bark and leaf extracts of Brosimum gaudichaudii Trécul against multidrug resistant strains

Abstract: Brosimum gaudichaudii Trécul., a plant that belongs to Moraceae family, is found throughout the Brazilian Cerrado. The antimicrobial activities of ethanolic bark and leaf extracts of B. gaudichaudii were tested against multiresistant bacteria isolated from diabetic foot infections (DFIs). Antimicrobial activity of the extracts was evaluated by agar disc diffusion (DD) and broth dilution (BD) methods. By BD method, bark (53.85, 45.83%) and leaf (42.31, 50.00%) extracts contained antimicrobial activity against b… Show more

“…Protocatechuic acid and catechin show strong antimicrobial activities against different bacteria [31,32]. In addition, the high phenolic composition of the bark extracts exerted strong inhibitory effects against the growth of microorganisms [33]. The phenolic profile of bark extracts used in this study was strongly related to the extended vase life of gladiolus flowers.…”

“…Lourenço, [ 105 ] tested the possible antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of B. gaudichaudii leaves and stem bark against S. aureus from clinical samples, beta-hemolytic streptococci, P. aeruginosa , E. coli , Citrobacter sp. and Proteus sp.…”

“…In recent years, knowledge from indigenous people is being explored to scout for novel medicines. In particular, in areas that are rich in biodiversity, such as the Brazilian Cerrado, ethnobotanists have scouted for plants whose extracts or oils have potential as pharmaceuticals ( Ferreira-Rodrigues et al, 2016 ; Borges et al, 2017 ; Oliveira et al, 2017 ). One plant that has been identified as a source of high-value essential oil is the Candeia tree ( Eremanthus erythropappus (DC) McLeisch), which primarily grows in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil.…”
