-The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of diets supplemented with plasma and/or yeast extract on performance (daily weight gain [DWG], daily feed intake [DFI] and feed conversion [FC]) and intestinal morphology of piglets from 7 to 63 days of age. A total of 288 piglets aged 7 days and weighing 2.57±0.05 kg were studied. A randomized block design consisting of four experimental diets, six repetitions and 12 piglets per experimental unit was adopted. The prestarter I (7 to 21 days), pre-starter II (22 to 35 days) and starter I (36 to 49 days) diets were supplemented as follows: control diet (CD): no plasma or yeast extract; plasma (PL) diet: addition of 6%, 4% and 2% plasma; yeast extract (YE) diet: addition of 6%, 4% and 2% yeast extract; plasma + yeast extract (PL+YE) diet: addition of 3%, 2% and 1% plasma and yeast extract each. From 50 to 63 days of age all piglets received the same diet. No difference in performance was observed from 7 to 21 days and from 7 to 28 days of age, whereas DWG was higher from 7 to 35 days in piglets receiving the PL+YE diet (268, 278, 271 and 288 g/day for CD, PL, YE and PL+YE, respectively). From 7 to 49 days and from 7 to 63 days, DWG (330 and 519 g/day, respectively) and DFI (307 and 647 g/day) were higher in animals receiving the PL-YE diet when compared with those consuming CD (DWG: 295 and 486 g/day; DFI: 266 and 594 g/day). No significant differences in intestinal morphology were observed between piglets receiving the different diets. The combination of plasma and yeast extract elevates DWG, but does not affect the intestinal morphology of piglets from 7 to 63 days of age.

RESUMO -Objetivando-se avaliar níveis de inclusão de plasma sangüíneo em pó nas dietas para leitões desmamados aos 21 dias de idade, foram utilizados 112 animais com peso inicial de 5,90 ± 0,40 kg distribuídos em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso com quatro tratamentos e sete repetições com quatro animais por unidade experimental, em três períodos subseqüentes: 21 aos 28 dias (período 1), 29 aos 35 dias (período 2) e 36 aos 42 dias (período 3). Os leitões foram mantidos no experimento dos 43 aos 56 dias (período 4) recebendo dieta convencional de creche. Os tratamentos consistiram de níveis de inclusão de 0,0; 4,0; 6,0 e 8,0% de plasma sangüíneo em pó no período 1; 0,0; 2,8; 4,2 e 5,6% no período 2 e 0,0; 2,0; 3,0 e 4,0% no período 3. O ganho de peso médio diário (GPMD) aumentou de forma quadrática até os níveis estimados de 4,3; 2,5 e 1,3% de inclusão de plasma sangüíneo em pó na dieta, nos períodos 1, 2 e 3, respectivamente. Não se observou efeito significativo da inclusão de plasma sangüíneo em pó sobre o consumo de ração diário médio e GPMD no período 4. Concluiu-se que os níveis de inclusão de plasma sangüíneo em pó nas dietas para leitões desmamados aos 21 dias de idade são de 4,3% na primeira semana, 2,5% na segunda e de 1,3% na terceira semana pós-desmame.Palavras-chave: alimento alternativo, fase inicial, manejo alimentar, pós-desmame Spray dry blood plasma levels in diets for piglets weaned at 21 days of age ABSTRACT -With the objective to evaluate the inclusion of spray dry blood plasma in diets for piglets weaned at 21 days of age (5.9 ± 0.40 kg initial BW), a total of 112 animals were allotted to completely randomize block design with four treatment and seven replications with four animals per experimental unit, in three subsequent periods: from 21 to 28 days (period 1), from 29 to 35days (period 2), from 36 to 42 days (period 3). The piglets were maintained in the experiment from 43 to 56 days (period 4) fed conventional nurse diet. The treatments consisted of inclusion levels of 0.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0% of spray dry blood plasma in the period 1, 0.0; 2.8; 4.2 and 5.6% in the period 2 and 0.0; 2.0; 3.0 and 4.0% in the period 3. The average daily weight gain (ADWG) increased in a quadratic form up to the estimate inclusion levels of 4.3, 2.5 and 1.3 of spray dry blood plasma in the diet, in the periods 1, 2 and 3, respectively. No significant effect was observed for the inclusion levels of spray dry blood plasma on daily feed intake and ADWG in the period 4. The aim was to determine the effect of orally administered ovine serum immunoglobulin (Ig) on growth performance, organ weight, gut morphology and mucin production in the Salmonella enteritidis -gavaged growing rat. Four groups consisted of non-gavaged rats fed a casein-based control basal diet (BD) and three groups of rats gavaged with 1 3 10 7 CFU S. enteritidis and fed a casein-based diet, a diet containing freeze-dried ovine Ig (FDOI) or a casein-based diet containing inactivated ovine Ig (IOI). The rats were randomly allocated to one of the four groups (n 5 15/group) and received their respective diets for an 18-day experimental study. Gavaging took place on day 15. Average daily gain and body gain : feed ratio (post-gavage, 3 days) were significantly (P , 0.05) higher for the Salmonella-challenged rats fed the FDOI diet compared to those fed the BD and IOI diets. At the end of the study, the small intestine and colon were significantly (P , 0.05) heavier for the gavaged rats fed the FDOI diet compared to the gavaged rats fed either the BD or IOI diet. Moreover, the relative weights of the caecum, liver and spleen of the gavaged rats fed the BD or IOI diet were significantly (P , 0.05) heavier compared to the gavaged rats fed the FDOI diet. Generally, the gavaged rats fed the FDOI diet had significantly (P , 0.05) higher goblet cell counts and luminal mucin protein contents than the gavaged rats fed either the BD or IOI diet and had a more functional gut morphology. Overall, the FDOI fraction prevented the acute effects of S. enteritidis.
