Evaluation of Analytical Methods to Study Aquifer Properties with Pumping Tests in Coastal Aquifers with Numerical Modelling (Motril-Salobreña Aquifer)

Abstract: Two pumping tests were performed in the unconfined Motril-Salobreña detrital aquifer in a 250 m-deep well 300 m from the coastline containing both freshwater and saltwater. It is an artesian well as it is in the discharge zone of this coastal aquifer. The two observation wells where the drawdowns are measured record the influence of tidal fluctuations, and the well lithological columns reveal high vertical heterogeneity in the aquifer. The Theis and Cooper-Jacob approaches give average transmissivity (T) and s… Show more

“…Although flow patterns with vertical upward components have been studied in other parts of the Motril-Salobreña aquifer [33,53], but in this study we did not identify these patterns. The explanation could be due to the shallow depth of the wells and the lagoons and therefore, the regional discharge of the aquifer to the coast did not impact the water level measurements neither the groundwater-surface water interactions.…”

“…The first experiment is a linear inverse problem involving straight‐ray travel time tomography. The remaining examples involve a groundwater pumping test with constant drawdown in which the horizontal hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer is estimated from pressure and hydraulic conductivity observations (Calvache et al, ; Yeh & Wang, ; Zech et al, ; Zhu & Yeh, ). For the pumping tests, three separate examples with alluvial/fluvial channel connectivity patterns in a 2‐D layer of an aquifer are discussed.…”

“…This research mainly focuses on an aquifer system consisting of several micro-confined and confined aquifers. Considering the complexity of the hydrogeology and the limitations of the analytical methods, the numerical method is more reliable and recognized for parameter estimation [47][48][49][50]. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model is developed in Visual Modflow [51] for groundwater drawdown calculation.…”
