Evaluation of an outpatient department (OPD)-based prescribing pattern of fixed-dose combinations in a tertiary care institute in Central India

Abstract: BackgroundFixed-dose combinations (FDCs) are being widely prescribed for the treatment of various disorders in India. However, not all FDCs are rational. To know the awareness of physicians in prescribing rational FDCs was the need of the hour in order to assess the prescribing trends and rationality of FDCs. Eventually, this will help to formulate the guideline for rational use of FDCs.MethodsThis was a prospective observational study conducted in All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal, MP, India. “…Analgesic combinations are appropriate for pain management and have been recommended by the WHO, especially for the management of pain of moderate to severe intensity [ 30 ]. In this study, it was found that fewer than one-tenth of patients had dispensing of these pharmaceutical forms, which is consistent with that reported in Japan and India (6.7–13.9%) [ 31 , 32 ]. However, it is important to note that these medications can be used incorrectly and can be dangerous in overdose [ 29 ].…”

“…The overall percentage of prescriptions with FDC was slightly higher when compared to another study from central India (43% in the present study vs 38% reported in that study). 7 Overall, multivitamins and minerals constituted the most commonly used FDC category in this study, as against the results…”

“…Although there are a few studies from India which describe FDC usage patterns (especially concerning irrational FDCs), a majority of these were carried out either at a single center or at most by involving a few centers. [6][7][8] In order to fill this gap, we present the findings from prescription evaluation research regarding FDC usage conducted in 13 tertiary care hospitals across India. The main purpose was not only to analyze the pattern of commonly used FDCs but also to see whether the prescriptions included (1) any of the FDCs that were banned at some point in time or (2) any of the FDCs that were classified as irrational (by CDSCO).…”

“…Hence, awareness of physicians in prescribing rational FDCs was the need of the hour. [27,28] In the current study, all prescriptions contained the dosage form, dose frequency, and treatment duration. The limitation of this study was that it did not encompass the adverse effect of the drugs prescribed.…”
