Evaluation of alveolar bone support around incisors in patients with unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate in late mixed dentition using cone beam computed tomography

Abstract: Patients with UCLAP have reduced alveolar bone support around the cleft-adjacent U1, and the apico-labial ABT tends to decrease with increasing lingual tooth inclination; however, the correlation was weak.

“…Three-dimensional evaluation of the alveolar bone, prior to orthodontic tooth movement, in cleft-adjacent teeth would help preserve bone, define timing for the secondary alveolar bone graft, and lower risk of causing dehiscence in susceptible areas (Garib et al, 2006, Rungcharassaeng et al, 2007, Garib et al, 2012). A few studies have looked into alveolar bone morphology, using CBCT, in patients with ULCLP (Ercan et al, 2015, Buyuk et al, 2016, Pan et al, 2018, Parveen et al, 2018). However, they either did not cover all the features of alveolar bone morphology (Buyuk et al, 2016, Parveen et al, 2018) or teeth adjacent to the cleft area (Ercan et al, 2015, Pan et al, 2018).…”

In this study, we evaluated different alveolar bone features in different surfaces of the teeth adjacent to the ULCLP including thickness, height, and the presence of fenestration.…”

“…The ABTs on the labial, lingual, and distal surfaces were measured on both sides (Figure 1G-J). The distal ABT on the noncleft side was measured using the horizontal distance between U1 and lateral incisor according to the coronal section line (Pan et al, 2018).…”
