Background: Rapid rise in petrol pump filling station is seen in the last decade, and air pollution had increased drastically. Air pollutants and components in petrol may have delirious effect on respiratory health. Petrol pump workers are exposed to both factors, whereas auto-rickshaw drivers are exposed mainly to air pollutants. In the present study, respiratory function in petrol pump workers was compared with auto-rickshaw driver and healthy controls. Materials and Methods: This was the cross-sectional study done on petrol pump workers, auto-rickshaw drivers, and healthy volunteers. ndd Large TrueFlow™ (EasyOne) spirometer was used to assess pulmonary function. One-way ANOVA and Chi-square test were used using statistical software. Results: No significant difference was seen in various spirometry parameters studied. Furthermore, no significant difference was observed the pattern of the lung function in three groups. Conclusions: Nine years of occupation as petrol pump worker and auto-rickshaw drivers are not having any significant effect on lung function; however, large multicentric trials are recommended, whereby the role of various factors controlling pollution would be studied.

Background: With rapid urbanization and economic development, occupational health hazards have grown as one of the major public health challenges. Many groups in the society are at greater risk of developing adverse consequences owing to their working environment, one such group is the petrol pump workers who by virtue of their occupation are continously exposed to the noxious chemical compounds present in gasoline. Hence, this study was undertaken to find out the effects of gasoline vapors on pulmonary function tests among the petrol pump fuel filling attendants working at various petrol pumps of Jaipur city, Rajasthan, India. Methods: Forty non-smokers, non-alcoholic adult males working as petrol pump workers for more than 3 years were considered as the study group. Forty matched healthy males of the institute served as the controls. The Pulmonary functions were assessed using computerized spirometer. Mean±SD values for each parameter were determined for both the study and control groups and compared using an unpaired 't' test. Results: A significant reduction (p<0.05) in FVC, FEV 1 , FEF25-75%, PEFR was found in the study group (Petrol pump workers) as compared to the controls, but the mean values of FEV 1 /FVC (%) were statistically not significant between the two groups. Conclusions: This study concludes that the petrol pump workers are at greater risk to develop pulmonary impairment (predominantly restrictive pattern of lung disease) with time and also, sensitizes for the need of medical surveillance and implementation of occupational safety programs to prevent work-related morbidities.

Background: Occupational and environmental exposure to petroleum refinery products poses a great threat to human health and petrol pump workers by virtue of their occupation are continuously exposed to petroleum gases and petroleum products. This community is generally neglected regarding their health. Aims and objectives: This study aimed to assess and compare the Pulmonary functions of petrol pump workers with age-sex matched normal healthy individuals by using computerized Spirometry. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study design in which 100 participants out of 50 petrol pump workers and 50 control group. Age, weight, height, ethnicity and socioeconomically matched subjects with minimum exposure of 3 years from different areas of Mathura district were recruited. Respiratory health of participants is ruled out by exclusion criteria. The Parameters TV, FVC (L), FEV1, FEV1/FVC, MVV and PEFR are measured by computerized spirometry (Helios). Results: The Spirometry values were significantly reduced in participants working in the petrol pumps as compared to the controls. A significant decline in lung function parameters TV, FVC (L), FEV1, MVV, and PEFR were observed and no significance found in FEV1 /FVC among Petrol Pump workers when compared to controls. Conclusion: Subjects working in Petrol Pumps have significantly impaired lung functions. The lung function impairment pattern provides evidence in the favour of obstructive and restrictive lung disease and suggests improving control measures in petrol pumps.
