Evaluation of actinomycete isolates obtained from herbal vermicompost for the biological control of Fusarium wilt of chickpea

Abstract: A total of 137 actinomycetes cultures, isolated from 25 different herbal vermicomposts, were characterized for their antagonistic potential against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri (FOC) by dual-culture assay. Of the isolates, five most promising FOC antagonistic isolates were characterized for the production of siderophore, cellulase, protease, hydrocyanic acid (HCN), indole acetic acid (IAA) and antagonistic potential against Rhizoctonia bataticola, which causes dry root rot in chickpea (three strains viz. … Show more

“…Al respecto, diversos autores manifiestan que los actinomicetos son una alternativa con gran potencial para ser usados como agentes de control biológico de Fusarium spp. (Gopalakrishnan et al, 2011), incluyendo a F. equiseti, y otros hongos fitopatógenos (Crawford et al, 1993;Al-Askar et al, 2011;Dávila Medina et al, 2013;Xue et al, 2013;Evangelista-Martinez, 2014 As for the in vitro antagonistic capacity against F. equiseti from the different isolates of the actinomycete, 14 completely inhibited the growth of F. equiseti at tenth day postconfrontation (Tables 2 and 3), possibly by the fungistatic or fungicidal action due the production of antibiotics or biocides diffusing through the medium (Fonseca-Ardila et al, 2011). In this regard, several authors state that actinomycetes are an alternative with great potential as biological control of Fusarium spp.…”

“…The fungus P. citrinum VFI-51 was screened for its antagonistic activity against M. phaseolina by dual culture assay as per the protocol of Gopalakrishnan et al (2011b) on glucose casaminoacid yeast extract agar plates. Three replications were maintained for each treatment and control and, the experiment was repeated three times.…”
