Over the past decade, a substantial body of research exploring soundscapes in religious historical buildings has emerged, yet a comprehensive summary of this work is lacking. This paper selects 74 typical studies of soundscapes in religious historical buildings published between 2011 and 2022 to conduct quantitative statistics and visualization analysis from a bibliometric perspective. The selected literature is categorized based on the type of religious building, Christian, Islamic, or Buddhist. The literature is further segmented according to the research subject, including sound field studies, sound analyses, and evaluations of the acoustic environment. The research methods employed are also differentiated and include sound field measurements, acoustic simulations, questionnaires and auralization procedures. The analysis reveals pronounced disparities in research foci depending on the type of religious historical building. For instance, studies on the soundscape in Christian churches tend to focus on objective sound field attributes and frequently employ sound field simulations to analyse the acoustic parameters of diverse church spaces and materials. Conversely, research on the soundscape in Islamic mosques prioritizes speech intelligibility and acoustic comfort, while studies of the soundscape of Buddhist temples gravitate towards the impact of natural and religious sounds on individuals. This paper anticipates the future direction of soundscape research on religious historical buildings. Graphical Abstract

Development of a Mosque Design for a Hot, Dry Climate Based on a Holistic Bioclimatic Vision

Over 50% of the total energy consumed by buildings in a hot and dry climate goes toward the cooling regime during the harsh months. Non-residential buildings, especially houses of worship, need a tremendous amount of energy to create a comfortable environment for worshipers. Today, mosques are regarded as energy-hungry buildings, whereas in the past, they were designed according to sustainable vernacular architecture. This study was aimed at improving the energy performance of mosques in a hot and dry climate using bioclimatic principles and architectural elements. To achieve this aim, a process-based simulation approach was applied together with a generate and test technique on 86 scenarios based on 10 architectural elements, with various arithmetic transition rates organized in 9 successive steps. Starting from a simplified hypothetical model, the final model of the mosque design was arrived at based on a holistic bioclimatic vision using 10 architectural elements. The findings of this research were limited to a specific mosque size in a hot and dry climate, but the proposed holistic bioclimatic concept can be developed to take into account all mosque models in several harsh environments.

The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of IEAP (Islamic ethical administrative practices) on the relationship between general cognitive ability (GCA) of Imamship and Masjid (mosque) Performance (MP) in Lagos State, Nigeria. This study utilized a quantitative approach. It employs a cross-sectional survey and administers 310 online questionnaires to the Chief Imams of central Masaajid (plural of a mosque/mosques) in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study used statistical techniques to analyze the collected data with partial least square structural - equation modelling - version 3 (PLS-SEM-V3). In the Lagos State of Nigeria, people have criticized the effectiveness of imams in theState. The critiques were raised based on the reason that the participation of Muslim Ummah in activities organized by imams is low. Ineffectiveness of imams this study aims to formulate the mediating effect of IEAP that will serve as the best administrative policy that can lead to a better management system in the Masjid to improve Masjid attendance and serve as an attraction for Muslims Ummah to come to the Masjid. The results of data on MP equally demonstrate that the Jama’ah would emulate their Chief Imams and consequently increase the performance of the Masaajid. This study recommends that with the presence of IEAP, the effectiveness of Chief Imam in promoting efficiency in MP by imbibing the knowledge/wisdom, truthfulness, responsibility/trust, and deliverance of Khutbah will increase. Finally, key benefits for practitioners and academia were discussed under the theoretical and practical contributions, while necessary suggestions for future study were recommended.
