Evaluation of a trajectory-based operations concept for small aircraft: airborne aspect

Abstract: The National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL) and the Electronic Navigation Research Institute (ENRI) are researching a new aircraft operations concept, named NOCTARN, based on three-dimensional flight trajectories shared between aircraft and air traffic control (ATC) via digital data link and negotiated using Control Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC). It is proposed to incorporate a route modification function that would be invoked each time a route were assigned to modify the predefined trajectory ba… Show more

“…Note that there is a significant overshoot around the "corner" (p = [0, 0] T ) as a consequence of the "discontinuity" caused by the concavity of P a . This is due to the definition of p r in (9) and (11).…”

“…Typical applications of shared-control are medical devices [1], mobility assistance [2] [3], tele-operation [4] [5], driving [6] [7], robotics [8], training systems [9] [10] and transportation systems [11] [12]. A shared-control strategy is used in [13] to help a disabled person to safely operate a wheelchair.…”

“…The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has been carrying out a research project called NOCTARN (New Operational Concept using 3D Adaptable Route Navigation) to demonstrate a Communication Navigation Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) system for small aircraft and helicopters based on precisely defined four-dimensional trajectories [6][7][8]. As part of this research, a prototype Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) with an Airborne Separation Assistance System (ASAS) function has been developed.…”
