Evaluation of a Three-Dimensional Stereophotogrammetric Method to Identify and Measure the Palatal Surface Area in Children with Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate

Abstract: Maxillary segments have the potential for growth during presurgical orthopedic treatment in the early neonatal period. The cleft segment delimitation on digital dental casts and area measurements by the 3D stereophotogrammetric system revealed an accurate (true and precise) method for evaluating the stone casts of newborn patients with UCLP.

“…Inanimate objects have been used in previous studies, which has the advantage of not skewing results with involuntary movements 11,38,40,43,44 . This is why we also adopted an inanimate model as part of this work: changes in soft tissue from involuntary movements could alter the results in such a manner that these differences could be improperly interpreted as inaccuracies of stereophotogrammetry systems.…”

“…[4567101112] The virtual analysis of the dental arch morphology from birth to skeletal maturity is easy, favors the diagnosis, and enables to tailor the therapeutic planning during the anatomic-functional rehabilitation. [13] Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the dimensional alterations of the dental arches of neonates with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate before and after two different primary surgery techniques.…”
