Evaluation of a three-dimensional chemical transport model (PMCAMx) in the European domain during the EUCAARI May 2008 campaign

Abstract: Abstract. PMCAMx-2008, a detailed three-dimensional chemical transport model (CTM), was applied to Europe to simulate the mass concentration and chemical composition of particulate matter (PM) during May 2008. The model includes a state-of-the-art organic aerosol module which is based on the volatility basis set framework treating both primary and secondary organic components as semivolatile and photochemically reactive. The model performance is evaluated against high time resolution aerosol mass spectrometer … Show more

“…We also used PMCAMx-2008(Fountoukis et al, 2011 to analyze the contributions of each selected source area to PM in Paris by zeroing out all the emissions (particles and gases) from different areas around Paris. These areas were selected to be the same with those defined in PSAT simulations.…”

“…OA is treated in this work as in Murphy and Pandis (2010). Fountoukis et al (2011) evaluated the PMCAMx-2008 performance for the same European domain against ground measurements taken at four measurement stations and airborne measurements during May 2008. The model reproduced more than 87 % of the hourly measurements of PM 1 OA and more than 94 % of the daily averaged OA concentrations within a factor of 2.…”

“…This feature may lead to errors in overprediction (artificial build-up of pollutants) and underprediction (unaccounted for mixing of pollutants from sources not directly in the parcel's path). For this reason, this study will focus on analysis of averaged diurnal profiles of OA concentration and O:C instead of comparisons to hourly measurements, which is the focus of Fountoukis et al (2011). In general, the performance of this 1-D model is similar but slightly worse than that of the full 3-D model.…”

“…During EUCAARI, the organic and inorganic aerosol modules of PMCAMx were improved (Fountoukis et al, 2011a) and the resulting model (called PMCAMx-2008) was applied for the first time in Europe. The domain consisted of the whole European continent, and extended from the Atlantic Ocean to the Middle East and from the North Pole to North Africa.…”
