Evaluation of a television‐tape demonstration for the reinforcement of oral hygiene instruction

Abstract: The effect of using a television-tape demonstration in order to reinforce the advice given in a self-teaching oral hygiene program was evaluated in the present study. The teeth of 24 periodontal patients were scaled and 2 weeks later oral hygiene instruction was given by handling out a self-teaching manual. “…Indeed, in the USA, the highly structured and widely applied tooth-keeper programmes were found to be rather ineffective (Graves et al 1975, Frazier 1978. Moreover, attempts to motivate patients for proper oral home care are time and personnel-consuming (Gjermo 1972) and do not necessarily lead to satisfactory and long-lasting results, despite self-instructional manuals (Glavind et al, 1981) or videotaped demonstrations (Glavind & Zeuner 1985). Worse, frequent repetition of instructions may put excessive pressure on patients who for psychological reasons seem unable to achieve a high level of plaque control (Aleouffe J985).…”

“…Psychological interviewing procedures increased patient-reported compliance (e.g., effectiveness of self-care and frequency of interdental cleaning). The different psychological interviewing methods all shoved higher effectiveness than standard instruction [28][29][30][31][32][33].…”

“…Researchers have also proposed several solutions taking advantage of technology. Videos for oral hygiene instruction have not shown any difference when compared to a clinical consultation [24, 25], but the videos in these studie were pre-recorded and generic (i.e. non-personalized).…”
