Evaluation of a solid nitrogen impregnated MgB2 racetrack coil

Abstract: To develop powerful wind turbine generators using superconducting technology, highperformance superconducting racetrack coils are essential. Herein, we report an evaluation of a multifilamentary magnesium diboride (MgB2) conductor-based racetrack coil cooled and impregnated simultaneously by solid nitrogen (SN2). The coil was wound on a copper former with 13 mm winding width, an inner diameter of 124 mm at the curvature, and 130 mm length of the straight section. An in situ processed S-glass-insulated 36-filam… Show more

“…The C-doped multifilament MgB 2 wire manufactured using the in situ process was utilized for fabricating the joints. ,, The field-dependent I c (s) of the MgB 2 wire at 20 K are shown in Figure with a cross-sectional optical image of the wire. The specifications of the MgB 2 wire are listed in Table S1 in the Supporting Information.…”

“…These attributes can be surprisingly fulfilled for solid nitrogen (SN 2 ). There are several studies where extensive IV characterizations of short MgB 2 samples and HTS coils were performed [14][15][16]. In [17] the authors investigate the application of SN 2 cooling for HTS current limiter, their results indicate the insufficient thermal contact between SN 2 and HTS superconductor.…”

“…However, to date, most of the MgB 2 applications are limited to demonstrators generating magnetic fields of up to 5 T at an operating temperature of 10 to 25 K [1]. So far, the global ongoing or completed projects based on MgB 2 superconductors can be roughly divided into two categories: high current cables [2,3] and superconducting magnet coils [4][5][6][7].…”
