Evaluation of a power plant concept for fast ignition heavy ion fusion

Abstract: The characteristics of a fast ignition heavy ion fusion~FIHIF! power plant are preliminarily evaluated. The reactor chamber consists of two sections: The upper smaller part is the microexplosion section proper; the lower bigger part is the condensation section, in which sprayed jets of coolant are injected. The first surface of the blanket is of generally accepted wetted porous design. The coolant is lithium-lead eutectic with an initial surface temperature of 820 K. The mass of the evaporated coolant just aft… Show more

“…The performance of such a heavy ion fast-ignited cylindrical target has been analysed in [24][25][26]. The parameters of the assembled DT fibre, ρ DT = 100 g cm −3 , R DT = 50 µm, surrounded by a layer of compressed lead at equal pressure, have been chosen such that the fuel ρR DT = 0.5 g cm −2 is slightly above the threshold value 0.3-0.4 g cm −2 for a steady burn wave along a DT cylinder inside a metallic liner [27].…”

“…Several new interesting ways for diagnostics occur when the dense plasma is generated by an intense ion beam, since there will be an emission of projectile and target radiation as well~Rosmej et al, 2005!. The accelerator facilities at GSI, in Darmstadt, Germany and ITEP in Moscow, Russia give already, or can give in the near future, an opportunity to realize some new proposals and thereby to investigate the behavior of matter under unique extreme conditions~Koshkarev, 2002; Medin et al, 2002;Sharkov et al, 1998;Alexeev et al, 2002;Stoewe et al, 2000;Henning, 2004;Hoffmann et al, 2005;Tahir et al, 2004!. Time resolved measurements of energy loss from an ion beam interacting with a target were suggested to be used as a diagnostic tool for line density measurement of the target Varentsov et al, 2002!. From such measurements some valuable quantitative information can be obtained about hydrodynamic motion of the heated target.…”

“…These effects were analyzed for a blanket with a liquid-film first wall of the reactor [3][4][5]. Thus, for total blanket thickness ~50 cm the fundamental frequency of the pulsations with amplitude to 50 MPa is 10-20 kHz.…”
