Evaluation of a new air displacement plethysmograph for measuring human body composition

Abstract: PURPOSE: The Bod Pod uses air-displacement plethysmography to estimate body fat percentage (BF%). This study was designed to assess the test-retest reliability of the Bod Pod. METHODOLOGY: The study included 283 women (M age = 41.0 yr., SD = 3.0). Each participant was tested at least twice in the Bod Pod. Results showed no significant mean difference between the test and the retest. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was .991. However, the absolute value of the initial trial differences (absolute mea… Show more

“…25 Thoracic gas volume was measured following the manufacturer's recommendations. 24 This value was integrated into the calculation of body volume. Total body fat mass was calculated as percentage total body fat mass multiplied by body mass (kg) and then divided by 100.…”

“…(Life Measurement Incorporated, Concord, CA, USA) according to the manufacturer's testing recommendations and guidelines. Details regarding the physical concepts and operational principles of the ADP are reported elsewhere (Dempster and Aitkens 1995;McCrory et al, 1995). Briefly, each subject wore a swimsuit and cap provided by the laboratory whereas body mass was measured to the nearest 100 g by an electronic scale connected to the BOD POD computer.…”

“…The device is a single egg-shaped unit consisting of two chambers: a test chamber where the subject is seated and a reference chamber with the breathing circuit. As described in detail (Dempster & Aitkens, 1995), the system determines body volume through an air displacement method by the application of Poisson's gas law (McCrory et al, 1995).…”
