Objectives: To examine the association of objectively assessed physical activity (PA) with markers of total and central body fat in adolescents, and to determine whether meeting the current PA recommendations (X60 min day À1 of at least moderate intensity PA) is associated with reduced levels of total and central body fat. Subjects/Methods: A total of 365 Spanish adolescents aged 12.5-17.5 years participated in this cross-sectional study. PA was assessed by accelerometry and expressed as average PA (counts per minute), and min day À1 of light, moderate, moderate to vigorous (MVPA) and vigorous PA. MVPA was dichotomized into o60 min day À1 and X60. Total body fat was measured by DXA, BodPod and the sum of six skinfolds. Central body fat was measured by DXA at three regions (R1, R2 and R3), and waist circumference. Results: All markers of central body fat were negatively associated with vigorous PA (Po0.01) after controlling for sex, age and pubertal status. Abdominal adiposity measured at R1, R2 and R3 was also negatively associated with MVPA (Pp0.001), and with average PA (Po0.01). All markers of total body fat were negatively associated with vigorous PA (Po0.01), MVPA (Po0.01) and average PA (Po0.05). Adolescents engaged on at least 60 min day À1 MVPA presented lower levels of total (Po0.05) and central body fat (Pp0.01). Conclusions:The results suggest that vigorous PA may have a greater effect on preventing obesity in adolescents than does PA of lower intensity, whereas both average PA and at least moderate PA may have an impact on total and central body fat in youth.

Objective: This study was designed to compare measured and predicted thoracic gas volume (V TG ) after weight loss and to analyze the effect of body composition confounders such as waist circumference (WC) on measured V TG changes. Design: Prospective intervention study. Setting: Outpatient University Laboratory, Lisbon, Portugal. Subjects: Eighty-five overweight and obese women (body mass index ¼ 30.073.5 kg/m 2 ; age ¼ 39.075.7 years) participating in a 16-month university-based weight control program designed to increase physical activity and improve diet. Methods: Body weight (Wb), body volume (Vb), body density (Db), fat mass (FM), percent fat mass (%FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) were assessed by air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) at baseline and at post-intervention (16 months). The ADP assessment included a protocol to measure V TG and a software-based predicted V TG . Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) (Hologic QDR 1500) was also used to estimate FM, %FM and FFM. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO 2 max) was assessed with a modified Balke cardiopulmonary exercise testing protocol with a breath-by-breath gas analysis. Results: Significant differences between the baseline and post-weight loss intervention were observed for body weight and composition (Vb, Db, %FM, FM and FFM), and measures of V TG (measured: D ¼ 0.2 l, Po0.001; predicted: D ¼ 0.01 l, Po0.010) variables. Measured V TG change was negatively associated with the change in the WC (P ¼ 0.008), controlling for VO 2 max and age (P ¼ 0.007, P ¼ 0.511 and P ¼ 0.331). Linear regression analysis results indicated that %FM and FM using the measured and predicted V TG explained 72 and 76%, and 86 and 90% respectively, of the variance in %FM and FM changes using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Conclusions: After weight loss, measured V TG increased significantly, which was partially attributed to changes is an indicator of body fat distribution such as WC. Consequently, measured and predicted V TG should not be used interchangeably when tracking changes in body composition. The mechanisms relating the reduction of an upper body fat distribution with an increase measured V TG are worthy of future investigation.

Objectives: To test the validity of a simple, rapid, field-adapted, portable hand-held impedancemeter (HHI) for the estimation of lean body mass (LBM) and percentage body fat (%BF) in African women, and to develop specific predictive equations. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Settings: Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, West Africa. Subjects: A total sample of 146 women volunteered. Their mean age was of 31.0 y (s.d. 9.1), weight 60.9 kg (s.d. 13.1) and BMI 22.6 kg/m 2 (s.d. 4.5). Methods: Body composition values estimated by HHI were compared to those measured by whole body densitometry performed by air displacement plethysmography (ADP). The specific density of LBM in black subjects was taken into account for the calculation of %BF from body density. Results: Estimations from HHI showed a large bias (mean difference) of 5.6 kg LBM (Po10 À4 ) and À8.8 %BF (Po10 À4 ) and errors (s.d. of the bias) of 2.6 kg LBM and 3.7 %BF. In order to correct for the bias, specific predictive equations were developed. With the HHI result as a single predictor, error values were of 1.9 kg LBM and 3.7 %BF in the prediction group (n ¼ 100), and of 2.2 kg LBM and 3.6 %BF in the cross-validation group (n ¼ 46). Addition of anthropometrical predictors was not necessary. Conclusions: The HHI analyser significantly overestimated LBM and underestimated %BF in African women. After correction for the bias, the body compartments could easily be estimated in African women by using the HHI result in an appropriate prediction equation with a good precision. It remains to be seen whether a combination of arm and leg impedancemetry in order to take into account lower limbs would further improve the prediction of body composition in Africans.
