Evaluation of a national curriculum reform effort for the medicine core clerkship

Abstract: BACKGROUND: In 1995, the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) developed and disseminated a new model curriculum for the medicine core clerkship that was designed to enhance learning of generalist competencies and increase interest in general internal medicine. “…Previous studies on the "dissemination" of national curricula in psychiatry, pediatrics, and internal medicine have demonstrated that the respective learning objectives in these curricula were used by 48% to 80% of surveyed clerkship directors for activities such as student orientation, self-directed study, design of lectures, faculty orientation, faculty-directed discussions, along with structuring of the clerkship schedule and content. 5,7,8 Several themes among clerkship directors in each of these studies were noted.
